There's no one from that generation left to ask (General)
Just received the certified marriage certificate for Richard Stephen Clark(e) and Sarah Ann Vining (1 December 1849) and William Clarke's occupation is listed as deceased, so I think I'm going to hang my hat on the 1845 death as being the correct William. (Now if only I could account for Elizabeth and some of the younger children . . .apparently that's a mystery for 2011 . . . )
