Canning Arms, Hartpury. (General)
by TheHistorian, Tuesday, January 18, 2011, 16:20 (5047 days ago)
Hi everyone,
I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about the 'Canning Arms' in Hartpury that was around in 1904/1905? Apparently my Great Great Grandfather, John Francis NASH was the Landlord/Victualler then.
Thank you.
Martin

Canning Arms
Gloucester Road, Hartbury,
Gloucester, Gloucestershire, GL19 3BT
http://www.gloucestershirecamra.org.uk/pubs/glospubs/new/FeatureFiller/index.php
In the mortgage taken out on the Hartpury Estate in 1908 the tenants of the Canning Arms were the Royal Well Brewery Co Ltd. of West Malvern.
As far as I know this was the only Gloucestershire pub that sold beers from the Royal Well Brewery.
There were 26 tied houses in their estate, which were offered for auction on 21st July 1930 and the brewery went into liquidation in 1931.
In 1908 the Canning Arms, together with 10 acres of land, had an annual rateable value of £70.
The Canning Arms has also been known as the Crown (on the 1809 Woolridge map) and the Rose and Crown (1841 census).
The licensees listed from 1985 are taken from transfer applications and it is not certain if all the applications were successful.
John Ashton, the last licensee, lived on the premises after the Canning Arms was de-licensed in 2002.
In 2007 a planning application was submitted to the Forest of Dean district council to create two separate dwellings at the Canning Arms.
1851,1856 Mary Long (Rose and Crown in 1856)
1867 Robert Giles
1809 John Moody (listed as the Crown Inn on a map)
1871, 1897 Charles Sivell (aka Charles Sivelle in 1881 and Charles Sivill in 1889)
1902 William Butt
1903 William George Winwood
1906 John Francis Nash
1906/07 R. McCann
1919,1927 Robert Burford
1939 Henry Trinder Millard (also employed as a dairy farmer and butter maker)
1977 Joyce Maureen Herbert from Victor James Herbert
1978 Trevor Davies (of the Queens Arms, Ashleworth) from Joyce Herbert
1979 Mrs E. Davies
1985 Roy George Durnall from Mrs E. M. Davis
1987 Ian Paul Douglas White from Roy Durnell
1991 John Mark Burns-Lindow from Ian Wayne Hamblett

I have only just come across your posting so you may have all the information you need.
John Francis Nash did have a spell as the landlord of the Canning Arms but the only reference I have to him is in the 1906 Kelly's Directory. In November 1902 we know the landlord was William George Winwood because an inquest was held there. By 1901 the pub had been taken over by Robert Burford, the son of a local butcher.
If you do have any further information about the length of his tenure I would be very pleased to hear of it
Regards, Corsend

Hello!
I'm really sorry about taking so long to get back to you. I'd no idea I had anymore replies to this thread.
Thank you for the information you gave me. As far as I'm aware John Francis Nash was the landlord at the Canning Arms for a few months or so but I'm not sure of exactly how long, I'm afraid. I'm trying to found out as much as I can of his spell as landlord but besides what I've found above and from your reply I haven't been able to find out much else as yet.
Take care,
Martin

I was very interested to find your message quite by chance on a "Google". My great grandmother was Mary Jane Richardson (nee Nash) the sister of John Francis Nash. Their parents were Robert and Mary Talbot Nash who kept the "South Leicester Hotel" in Ellistown, Leics.from c 1888 to c 1904. I believe John Francis moved back there after 1906 as he appears on the 1911 census at Ellistown and is in 1912 Wrights directory.
I would be delighted to get in touch with you further about our family.

Hello Ann,
I'm so sorry to have not messaged you back before now, I had no idea I had anymore replies to this thread. As long as you're still happy to, I'd love to get in touch with you about our family. I'll try and private message you my e-mail so you can e-mail me if you'd like to.
Thank you for telling me what you did. I found that John Francis Nash was at the South Leicester Hotel in 1911/1912 as I believe I found him in the 1911 Census & 1912 Wrights Directory as well but I'd no idea that Robert and Mary Talbot Nash ran it before he did.
Take care,
Martin
