My name is George Mitchell and I live in California,U.S.A. I am the 4x greatgrandson of Thomas Baldwin and his wife Sarah Waldin through their son Moses and his wife Lucy Marfell. I have information on the Marfells but am now seeking further information on the Baldwins such as dates and places of births, marriages and deaths. I know that Thomas was born in 1746 and Sarah in 1745. I also know that Thomas's fathers name was James and he was married to Betty Brain. From there it is a dead end. Dates and places (and more names) would be very much appreciated. Thank You, George

by geomitchell, Saturday, January 29, 2011, 02:13 (5052 days ago) @ slowhands

George Mitchell again. I am still seeking more information on the Baldwins. Would now like to know about Warren Baldwin, father of James, who is married to Elizabeth Brain, of whom are the parents of Thomas. Would like info where and when Warren was born, when and to whom did he marry and when and where he died. I hope that is not to much to ask. Thanks in advance for your time and patience. George

Ruardean Parish Records - B.M.D.of a Thomas Baldwin.

by jimashton @, Friday, January 28, 2011, 13:01 (5053 days ago) @ geomitchell

George

I am glad to see you did manage to get registered eventually.

You now have access to a wonderful range of Parish Records, which you can use to add to the information I sent you in a report which already contains baptism etc. for the descendants of Moses Baldwin. I didn't know how far you wanted to go back.

Slowhands has already got it right that the parents of Thomas Baldwin are indeed James Baldwin & Betty Brain married 22 May 1743, his father being Warren Baldwin. I have never traced this Baldwin line further back as neither Thomas Baldwin & Sarah Waldin 1746 are related to, although I am to their descendants.

A family as prolific as the Baldwins does sometimes lead to confusion over which is which, but the clue to Thomas Baldwin's ancestry is on the parish record for his marriage to Sarah; the witness James Brain no doubt related to his mother. When you get used to the parish records you will learn to ignore Joseph Harper as he was a church official and appears as a witness on hundreds of parish records. You will note that you also need to tick the soundex box, to capture the variants of the way names were spelt when a lot of people could neither read or write :

Year: 1767

Grooms_Surname: BALDWYN
Grooms_Forenames: Thomas

Brides_Fathers_Surname:
Brides_Fathers_Forenames:
Brides_Fathers_Occupation:
Licence_or_Banns: Banns
Date_of_Banns: 12 19 26 Jul
Signature_or_Mark: both marked
Witness_1: James BRAIN
Witness_2: Joseph HARPER
Other_Witnesses:
Officiating_Minister: John HARRIS - curate
Event: Marriage

Finally - I believe - the correct baptism of the two shown by Slowhands for Sarah Waldin is the 1746 one with parents James Waldin & Sarah Tingle, in turn married 3 May 1741, Sarah being the daughter of Richard Tingle & Mary Yemm. Sarah's sister Elizabeth Tingle married a William Dovey and their daughter Elizabeth Dovey married Charles Baldwin - their daughter Winifred married a Yemmn whose son married a Marfell...........
Time to stop rambling, but it indicates a very tangled weave.
