Thomas and Hannah Morris American Migrants? (General)

by tonyjenkins @, Tuesday, February 08, 2011, 21:46 (5041 days ago)

I am unable to find any UK (English or Welsh) Census records for 1881 for my 2x GGrandparents Thomas and Hannah Morris (Nee Jones)

Thomas was born in Kerry Montgomery abt 1824. He married Hannah Jones abt 1858 Hannah was born abt 1827 in Llancillio. Hannah died in 1900 Monmouth.

I believe both Thomas and Hannah were married previously.

My GGrandmother Mary Ann Morris was born in Llanfauner abt 1874

I have found a record for Thomas and Hannah Morris in Licking Newark Ohio (1880) both born Wales (dates fit)no Mary Ann Morris

Can anyone advise on how I can research my theory that Thomas and Hannah went to America but returned to live in Herefordshire abt 1890.

Kind Regards

Tony Jenkins

Hi Slowhands.

My best info is based on the 1891 census Citation RG12 piece 4341 Folio 52 page 1

Thomas Morris b abt 1817 Newtown Montgomery
Hannah Morris b abt 1824 Llancillio
Mary Ann (My GGrandmother) b abt 1869 Llangattock
1901 census ref RG13 4922 Mary Ann indicates that she was born in Llanfauner
Thomas Hubert Morris b 1891

Thomas Hubert died 1898 in Clearwell, after my GGrandmother married James William Jenkins at Monmouth in 1895.

Mary Ann was baptised on 3 May 1869 at Llangattock Vibon Avel parents Thomas and Hannah Morris lab of Chapel farm

Hannah died in the second qtr of 1900 Monmouth. I can find no death for Thomas.

I believe Mary Ann worked as a cook for the Payne family at Lambsquay house between 1892 and 1895

Kind Regards

Tony

Thomas MORRIS 1817 Kerry / Newtown MONT

Hi Slowhands

Thanks

It looks like Thomas had a habit of marrying widows his first wife (1851 census) being 20 years older than Thomas, had a son John Bevan by a previous marriage.

It looks like his first wife died between 1861 and 1871 I am checking Mike Johns transcripts of Llangattock Vibon Avel for a Anna Morris burial that fits.

On the 1871 census he is married to a Hannah who had brought a son William Jones to the marriage. This marriage is proving difficult to establish. My thoughts are that it took place in Abergavenny about 1865 It is this Hannah that gave him my GGrandmother Mary Ann (Marianne) baptised Llangattock Vibon Avel

My next move is to obtain the death certificate for Hannah.

Your thoughts on a potential death for Thomas would be appreciated.

Many thanks for your help.

Many thanks to Slowhands

Once again Slowhands has come up trumps.

Thinking outside the box has enabled me to find my GGrandfather on the 1881 census.

With a Kerry in both Montgomeryshire and Ireland it is natural that when transcribing the census in India one would associate Kerry with Ireland although the actual census lists Kerry Montgomeryshire.

Lets hope that future census transcripts are completed by people with better geographical knowledge.

Regards

Tony
