John REYNOLDS 1797 Blaisdon & Walford

This John Reynolds bap 6 Nov 1796 at Blaisdon, was the son of William Reynolds, a woodcutter & wife Mary nee Baldwin. My ancestor Thomas Reynolds, was a younger brother of John.
In case it is of interest to anyone, William Reynolds met an untimely death:
e.g. From the Glos Journal dated 1st March 1845

'Extraordinary Death Of An Old Man From Fire:-
Mr Cooke, coroner, held an inquest on Tuesday, at Northwood's Green, on the body of William Reynolds, aged 70, whose death took place under rather extraordinary circumstances. The deceased was a woodcutter, and on the lst of February was following his occupation, in company with his brother, his grandson, and some other workmen. The working party were unfortunately too liberally supplied with beer or cider, and in an interval from their labour, they sat round a fire in the wood, and enjoyed themselves to such an excess that all of them became more or less intoxicated. In this state, the deceased and his grandson lay down to sleep, and the others separated to proceed with their work. Soon afterwards the old man's brother returned to look after them, and found the deceased lying with his leg across the fire and burning. He rolled him from his dangerous position, extinguishd the fire, and asked him if he was not much hurt, to which he muttered, ''No, not hurt at all''. He then, strange to say, walked home, assisted by his companions, a distance of between three and four miles, apparently suffering from nothing but drink, except that he said he felt a little stiffness in his heel. It was, however, afterwards found that he was a good deal burnt, and a surgeon was sent for, but mortification took place, and he died yesterday week. Verdict, accidental death.'

Hi Jean

Do you have any information regarding the Mary Baldwin who married William Reynolds. I have 467 Baldwin's in my family tree, including a Mary Baldwin 1779, which would make her only 16 at marriage, if she was baptised the year she was born. Her parents Joseph Baldwin and Anne Cooper married in 1776. They also had a son Joseph 1781 whose great great grandaughter Clara May Baldwin 1860 married my great great uncle Thomas Marfell 1855.

Hi Jim,

Mary Reynolds nee Baldwin buried 11th April 1853 aged 72 at Blaisdon (of Northwood Green). Her late husband William Reynolds (bap 31 Jan 1773 Westbury - bur 25 Feb 1845 Blaisdon) was the son of William Reynolds 1742 - bur 8 July 1810 aged 68 at Blaisdon & Sarah Harper 1744-1827 - (they marr 14 April 1771 at Blaisdon).

Hi Jim,

A bit of doubt concerning the parentage of Mary Baldwin? Mary Baldwin bap 2 May 1779 at Redmarley, daughter of Joseph & Anne nee Cooper - is the same child who died 1781?
e.g. Mary Baldwin bur 30 Mar 1781 at Redmarley - infant.
I think Mary Baldwin who marr William Reynolds was bap 4 Nov 1781 at Ruardean, daughter of Richard & Sarah Baldwin. Her age (Mary) at burial in 1853 aged 72 makes a good match.

Thanks Anthony

But I believe the Mary Baldwin 1781, daughter of Richard Baldwin 1744 & Sarah Herbert 1748 married Joseph Hale 28 Jul 1805 at Walford.

Joseph Hale & Mary had 4 children, including Nehemiah & Mary who were with her in 1841. Joseph died in 1833. All their events were in Ruardean, except marriage in Walford - the latter being common as the vicar lived there, you will see this fact endorsed on the BT.

1841 Census Ruardean Hill area
Mary Hale abt 1779 Dean Forest
Mary Hale abt 1821 Dean Forest,
Nehmiah Hale abt 1826 Dean Forest Collier

I have both the Mary Baldwin's you mention in my Family Tree, Mary Baldwin 1781 is related, but Mary Baldwin 1779 is not, but she is in my tree as her brother Joseph Baldwin 1781 Redmarley married Mary Ennis 1784 Redmarley they had 7 children including Richard 1818 who married Catherine Ingles 1818, their son Edwin Charles Baldwin 1837 married twice, the first time to Ellen Matilda Matthews 1836 - 7 children including Clara May Baldwin 1860 who married my Great Great Uncle Thomas Marfell 1855 - and that's why they are in my Family Tree !!

I take the point about the death of Mary Baldwin 1779 in 1781 with both the baptism & burial at Redmarley - I hadn't picked that up, thanks.

So in my view, the search for the Mary Baldwin who married William Reynolds goes on.

Hi Slowhands and Anthony

I have John Reynolds 1797 and Mary Davis in my family tree as their daughter Ann Reynolds married Cornelius Holmes 1831, they had 7 children that I know of, including Cornelius John Holmes 1857 who married my 1st cousin 3 times removed Charlotte Marfell born 13 Nov 1848.

When Cornelius John Holmes died 30 Sep 1893, Charlotte nee Marfell remarried to Thomas Rogers.

I have Charlotte's birth & marriage certificate to Cornelius John Holmes, also a picture of the gravestone for Cornelius Holmes 1831 & wife Ann nee Reynolds, also Cornelius John and his sister Mary Ann Yull nee Holmes who interestingly is detailed on the gravestone, but died 6th Jan 1901 Rochester USA. Unfortunately I do not know her spouses name.

If you email me I will be happy to share the images with you.
