The family of Dennis Saunders(b.1919) are visiting Lydney in April to retrace family history.Dennis's father was Hubert Saunders(b.1881) at 7 Hill street Lydney and later married Geneva Allen and second marriage to Kathleen Bush. Any information on local church graveyards, schools and any living relatives which could help us in our search would be most welcomed.

Thank you for this valued information I can remenber my dad Dennis Victor saying "the forest was God's own country". I can also remenber as a child visiting my Auntie Rosa she lived in High street Lydney in a Railway house with the train track and train crossing by the side of her house this was the family home of my great grandparents for many years. I know this is no longer there, any ideas please where I could get old photo's of it.I also can remenber visiting my grandfather Hubert in tutshill. Would you have any info where I could make enquiries as to where any of them were buried in Lydney. Again thank you so much for your help. Me and my 3 brothers 2 sisters are really looking forward to coming to Lydney.

I have been looking for his death reg - no Hubert but there is :-

Name: Herbert A Saunders
Death Registration Month/Year: 1959
Age at death (estimated): 78
Registration district: Forest of Dean
Inferred County: Gloucestershire
Volume: 7b

this may help narrow things down, if it was in Lydney then I'd be looking in the new cemetry across Church Rd from St Mary's

I knew Dennis Saunders, as his father Hubert was married to my mothers sister Kathleen Bush. They are buried together in the new cemetary in Lydney just iside the gates on the left hand side. I am in contact with his three living sons and his daughter.

Hi Pauline anne,
Hubert's father was John SAUNDERS b.1852, his parents were Charles bapt. 21 Aug 1803 d. 18 Jun 1858 and Hannah ALLEN. They were married on 28th Dec 1829 in Berkeley, Glos.
Charles' father was Thomas bapt. 18 May 1753 d. 4 Jan 1830. He married Sarah Webster in Lydney church on 26th Dec 1782.
Thomas's parents were Robert SAUNDERS and Jane DAVIS. I have been unable to find Roberts birth but I know he was married on 2 Jan 1738 in Lydney and died in Lydney on 25 Nov 1768, where he is burried.
If you go through the Lychgate at St. Mary's church, Lydney you will find a collection of headstones on your left hand side about 15 yards in who are all SAUNDERS and are all decendents of Robert and Jane.
You will also find Victor on the Cenotaph outside the churchyard.
My connection.....Charles (1753) is my GGGG grandfather.
