John MORGAN 1820-1881 Lydbrook (General)

by Carole Lewis @, Thursday, March 03, 2011, 22:44 (5018 days ago)

I wonder if anyone has any information about John Morgan, the quarryman, who lived in Moorwood and married Hester Cowmeadow.

The 1841 Census has him living in Moorwood aged 20 with Hannah aged 35 and his siblings presumably: Thomas born approximately 1829 and Hannah 1826.

The only relevant sounding baptismal record for him on this site suggests his parents are Hannah and John. The only marriage record that fits is that of John Morgan and Hannah Giles in 1821.

This is really only an educated guess on my part as I cannot find any other references to members of his family other the 1841 Census. There seems to be no way to fit him into the Morgan families that lived around this area at the time.

Any ideas would be very welcome.
Carole

It might "fit" but I'm not convinced - it took place in Chepstow which might be explained because its after John's birth...

John MORGAN 1820-1881 Moorwood Coppice Lydbrook-prior thread

Many apologies,Slowhands. I have just found your response to my questions and would like to thank you for putting this information together.

The pattern in my family seems to be that the women had children before marriage so it seems likely that Hannah Giles was John Morgan's wife.

Whilst looking through some Essex registers for a different branch of my family I found a handwritten list of church charges for marriages. Given the charges I should think that the cost of marrying was a challenge to many people at the beginning of the 19th century.

I must now try to chase up Hannah Giles.
Thanks again.
