SMITH, Dumbleton / Eldersfield/Corse (General)

by unknown, Wednesday, March 09, 2011, 07:14 (5013 days ago)

I'm looking for information on William Smith, born Dumbleton, and his family.
There is a Wm. Smith, born 1776 to Joseph and Elizabeth Smith (IGI Batch Numbers ) who married Elizabeth Wood 1804 in Eldersfield (Parish Records Transcripts). Their son Thomas,my G-G-Grandfather, was born Eldersfield 1806.
The 1841 Census has William and Elizabeth living in Birtsmorton, WOR, as was son Thomas. The 1851 Census has William, widower, living with son Thomas, still in Birtsmorton.
I'd like to find siblings of both William and Thomas. Marilyn from the Glo. List has given me some information from BDM indexes and now another place, Corse, has come into the picture. This search may be evn more of a long shot than I thought as there are more than 900 entries for a William and 700 for Thomas.!

Thank you for all that information. The last group listed is my family, Thomas Snr being my G-G-Grandfather. He and 7 of his sons were thatchers but the expansion of the railway system and the easy availability of other roofing materials brought about a decline in the use of thatch. So, when Thomas the father died in 1869 quite a few of the family went to Massachusetts to find work. Then after a few years there they all, (except one), migrated here, to Queensland Australia where they remained. Some of us, their descendants, are planning a Reunion for 2012 plus a book hence the increased research efforts. Appreciate your help, it's not easy to access this sort of thing from the other side of the world.

Yes please, Allan, for names dates etc. Hannah Smiths obituary (she died in Queensland) says she brought up 16 children but 4 were stepchildren. There seems to be some confusion about the children of Catherine, the second wife of Thomas. Bishops Transcripts give baptisms at Berrow for 2 children, Mary and George, to Emma. Some sources say Catherine had a Maria and William. If you can clear up which children belong to which marriage I will be very grateful. Apologies for delay in replying to your kind offer but I was in hospital for 2 months and am just getting back into family history.
