John Ball/Thomas Globe - a foundling with two names (General)
by amlet, Friday, March 18, 2011, 12:20 (5003 days ago)
Hello. I'm a newbie to this site and my name is Richard Globe.
I'm in need of guidance.
My 6x great grandfather was Thomas Globe born in 1759, died Yorkshire (Wentworth) 25th October 1820 aged 60. Thomas was admitted to the London Foundling Hospital on July 20th, 1759. I have from the London Met. Archives (LMA) his complete records.
This week I heard from the London Foundling Museum who did a look up for me in the Billet Books they had on loan from the LMA. (The Billet Books sometimes contain information about the mother and tokens taken from a foundling child for purpose of identification).
There was no token taken for Thomas Globe, however there was a note attached to his name that reads:
This is to certife [sic] that John the baseborn child of Sarah Ball was baptised in th Parish church of Westbury in the County of Gloucester on the first day of July 1759. (signed) Wm. Hawkins, Curate
I've searched and found a William Hawkins who was curate at the Parish Chapel: Westbury-on-Severn, Gloucestershire around this time. I've searched the parish records on this site, however there are no transcription entries for a Sarah or John Ball around this date. Now I'm stuck.
I wonder if all the parish chapel records for Westbury-on-Severn have been transcribed?
Am I searching in the right place?
Should I ask for a look up in the Gloucester archives?
As I live in Copenhagen any suggestions and/or help will be gratefully received.
Many thanks
Richard Globe

Thank you so much slowhands (your name does you injustice, you were very prompt to reply). I wonder if this could be him. The entry in the Foundling Hospital's archives state he was "abt. 1 month" - however this is closer than I've ever been.

John Ball/Thomas Globe - a foundling with two names
by grahamdavison , Friday, March 18, 2011, 23:59 (5003 days ago) @ amlet
I have just looked at the original parish register for Westbury on Severn for 1 July 1759 and there is the following entry:
John son of a stranger born of Thos Marshal.
This could be the baptism you are looking for with the stranger being Sarah Ball. If so then you also know the father`s name.
The other possibility is that the Westbury is Westbury on Trym which is near Bristol, I note that the IGI doesn`t contain the baptisms for this parish.

Dear grahamdavidson,
Thank you so much. I can honestly say I hadn't expected this and am a little stunned.
Many thanks for taking the trouble to look in the parish register, as this for me is a significant find. I'll keep you updated on further findings.

' John - son of a stranger born of Thos. Marshall' - 1 July 1759 - (which was a Sunday) same christening date as the London Foundling records and signed by William HAWKINS - curate.

???? - using the Advanced Search of children - baptised, father Thomas MARSHALL (Westbury on Severn)
Thomas MARSHALL and wife Elizabeth have children baptised at Westbury on Severn around that time.

Thank you m p griffiths. It would be so convenient if grahamdavidsons find did fit, and believe me I would like it to and would be over the moon if it did, but to be honest who would know who the father was except Sarah. I've discovered an overseers report for a Sarah Ball from Westbury-on-Severn from 1760, and as these can be goldmines of information I'll contact the Gloucester Archives. If any forum member is at the archives and would care to do a lookup, I'd of course be very grateful.
Oh, the complexities of Family History .......

Thank you slowhands and m p griffiths for those replies.
I'm beginning to suspect that Sarah Ball might have arrived at Westbury-on-Severn from another parish, and that the parish sent her son John Ball (re-baptised as Thomas Globe) to the London Foundling Hospital as he would have been a burden on the parish. This of course is all speculation. The Foundling Hospital had an open doors policy in 1759 and received literally thousands of children. The death rate however was 61% so not that many survived.
I have photos of the original Billet Book entry for John/Thomas and should anyone care to contact me, I can forward them.

July 1759 - Sarah BALL's child Bastardy Bonds
by amlet, Thursday, March 24, 2011, 07:16 (4998 days ago) @ Simone
Thank you everyone who has provided input to this thread. Yesterday, I received a message from the Gloucestershire Archives which I'm posting below. Overseers accounts can be a goldmine of information and I'm wondering now how to proceed.
Any thoughts or suggestions gratefully received.
Of course I've written and thanked the Archives for their assistance.

Thank you for your email. Unfortunately the attachment you sent appears to have been lost, so I am unable to advise you further, based on the information it contains. The reference you found relates to the overseers records of the Parish of Westbury-on-Severn. These records have been indexed and transcribed, due to their fragile nature. Below is a transcript of the entry relating to Sarah Ball in Westbury-on-Severn in 1760:
Indemnity Bond
1760 Careless and Davis for Sarah Ball’s bastard child.
There is another reference to this in 1759 (P354 OV 5/1/6):
16 Jul 1759 Thomas Careless of Hampton Bishop, Herefordshire, blacksmith, and James Davis of Hampton Bishop, mason, bound for the male bastard child of Sarah Ball of Castle Frome, Herefordshire born in Westbury-on-Severn.
This means that either Thomas or James could have been the father of Sarah’s child. They would have had to give Sarah money to support herself and the child. If they could not do this, they would then have to pay the parish money – this is probably the reason for the indemnity bond. It is possible that more information is held at Herefordshire Record Office, The Old Barracks, Harold Street, Hereford, HR1 2QX (Telephone: 01432 260750 E-mail; archives@hereford.gov.uk) http://www.herefordshire.gov.uk/leisure/archives/3007.asp.
Unfortunately Gloucestershire Archives no longer possesses the staffing resources to offer a detailed research service. If you would like to obtain copies, please let us know the finding references of the documents you are interested in and we can provide you with a quotation.
As you are unable to visit in person, some private researchers advertise their services through our web site, although we take no responsibility for the quality of the service provided. Their details can be found at www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/familyhistory.
I am sorry that Gloucestershire Archives is unable to help you further in this instance, but I hope that this information is of help to you in your research.
Yours sincerely,
