VOYCE Thomas b 1845 d 1923 of Coleford - parents (General)

by bonnie1man @, Saturday, March 26, 2011, 22:11 (4995 days ago)

I've come to a deadend with Thomas Voyce b 1845 in West Dean and d 1923 in Coleford. He was a coal miner and married Sarah Burton b 1853 and d 1933. Many of his children emigrated to Seymour Iowa. I'm looking to trace his parents and ancestors. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thomas is my husbands great grandfather. thanks Bonnie in the US

VOYCE/ VOICE Thomas -stepfather Ben ROBERTS?

by bonnie1man @, Friday, August 12, 2011, 21:31 (4856 days ago) @ Simone

I'm coming to believe that Thomas Voyce was born to MaryAnn Voice out of wedlock. She then married Benjamin ROberts and Thomas Voyce (b ~ 1845 d 1923) was raised as his step son. In addition to what information Simone provide, there is also information from Benjamin's will, it lists all his children and wife with relationships provided but for Thomas Voyce, no relationship was provided. See below. MaryAnn's father was George Voice so that provides the link backwards in the Voice line but we don't know Thomas Voyce real biologic father. I may request Thomas's official marriage or birth certificate to see if they shed any light on this. Simone, your help is hugely appreciated as it got me thinking in a different way. The comments on the first child of Thomas Voyce and Sarah BUrton regarding Roberts/Voyce is also supportive of this line of thinking. Bonnie

In a 1986 letter I have from Somerset Herald, who were doing research on this family, it states Henry Cooper is named on the birth certificate of Thomas. It also states he was the illegitimate son of Marianne/Mary Ann. She did marry the Benjamin Roberts referred to in these posts and George & Hannah were her parents and James & Anne of Berry Hill were his parents.

VOYCE Thomas b 1845 d 1923 of Coleford - parents

by bonnie1man @, Sunday, March 27, 2011, 02:47 (4995 days ago) @ bonnie1man

The Baptism record for Thomas Voice seems possible - is it common for VOICE to turn into VOYCE in later generations?

thomas Voyce is buried in Coleford Cemetery in an "unconsecrated" area. Does that mean he wasn't baptized? last time I looked there was no marriage certificate for him and Sarah Burton who is also buried in Coleford Cemetery in an "unconsecrated" grave. If unconsecrated means no baptism then the record which was found probably isn't correct - though the location in lane end is consistent with Thomas and sarah's residence for their first few children's birth.

A few of their first children born, were baptized in Christchurch, so these records that Simone and Slowhands found for the baptism could be correct. I suspect that Thomas and Sarah were married around 1870 as their first child was born in 1872 (Fanny). In Fanny Voyce's baptism record there is a memorandum that indicates [Surname given an ROBERTS otherwise VOYCE}. The second child, Sydney didn't have such a memorandum on his baptism record.

THus I'm not certain what to make of the "unconsecrated" graves and the memoranda on Fanny's parish record for baptism.

Thanks for your further thoughts. Bonnie

"unconsecrated" grave - possibly means that he has taken up non-conformist worship i.e. Baptist / Methodist.

As for Voyce/Voice - as I often write - just keep an open mind about spellings - the "sound" is often more important

Hi,
My grandmother was Fanny Voice b. 1872. She had a twin sister Lucy. Parents Jonas Voice and Elizabeth (Morse) Voice. I notice on various things I have read where 'another' Fanny, same age was present. I think it was the 1881 census. Bit of a coincidence!

As Slowhands said, I wouldn't worry about the 'unconsecrated' grave. I have definite family baptised but buried in unconsecrated, this is something I also queried in a previous thread

http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=29956
quote;_
Also the burials I have, most of which are the children in the family, but there is one for dad too, are mixed between being buried in unconsecrated and consecrated. Why would that be? e.g Jane Howell not baptised was buried in consecrated ground, wheras Raymond who was baptised was buried in unconsecrated ground. Dad Evan was baptised but buried in unconsecrated ground. Does the baptism have any bearing on the issue?

Hello, sorry I cant help you with your research as im just starting out myself my name is William Voyce and I live in Ludlow England. I do know that the Voyce/Voice clan came over in 1066 from the village of Voise in Normandy, so the name was Anglisised and neither spelling is correct. Just to say hi really and best wishes and good luck!

Bill and others - thanks for the information. I've done quite a bit of work on Thomas and descendants and have compiled information on Thomas Voyce and his family that came to the US - mostly Seymour Iowa but one son found his way to Washington State and was a State Senator for a short while. Most came over as coal miners - owning their own mine for awhile until the union burnt it up. I'm hugely appreciative of what folks have been able to provide on the ancestry and where the group originated from - all this is new to me. Really terrific to see. Bonnie

My grandmother etc. were all Voice. Seemed to change to Voyce about 1900. The first one I have found that seems to belong is William Voice b. 12.01.1772 in Longhope. (Married Elizabeth Anderson on 18,19,1790. Is this your family:

hi KAREN,good to hear from you, i just moved house and my stuttering search has spluttered to a stop. There were Voyce,s in SUSSEX and in GLOUCS in the 1500s, I believe the spellings were down to lack of literacy and local accents. I hope your search goes well. Bill.
