Downhams of Bream (General)
I am a fellow family historian and live in Gloucester. I have relatives called
Hulbert and two turned up in Bream. Fanny Elizabeth and her younger sister Ellen
and both married Albert Downham. Fanny died in Jan 1896 and Ellen came to look
after the children and subsequently married Albert in the Nov 1896 at Monmouth
Register Office.
James Downham originated from Croydon, Surrey, married Mary Horlick from Cranham
at Cheltenham in 1851 and all of their eight children were born in Brockworth.
Albert the eldest married Fanny Elizabeth Hulbert at Brockworth Church in 1875
(Fanny was a servant in the Brockworth/Upton area where her Grandfather Thomas
Hulbert was born in Upton St Leonards and migrated to Huntley and his son
William lived in Birdwood and this is where Fanny was born.
Albert was a publican at the Victoria, Brockworth, a General Dealer in 1889 at
Lea, a Collier in 1891 at Bream then a Corn Merchant and finally a Baker in 1899
and he had the shop and bakery at Bream which is shown in your Picture Gallery
for Meek's Shop (same building).
I have no idea when the two photographs they were taken. They were in my late
mother's photo album. If you can give me any further information I would be grateful.
