George JOHNSTON in Llandogo, Coleford, Monmouth (General)

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the forum and am hoping that somebody may be able to help me.

I'm researching a relative of mine:

George JOHNSTON, Born London 1805, Died Paris 1881.

He was a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the service of the East India Company.

His probate entry descibes him as: 'Late of 102 Rue du Faubourg, St. Honore, Paris and Llandogo, Coleford in the County of Monmouth.

This is the first time that there has been a mention of a Welsh connection and I am assuming that he came to the area between his retirement from the East India Company in 1853 and his death in 1881.

Prior to that he had been in India since 1825. The only other information I have is that he was born in London and his Father was a Charles JOHNSTON 'of Dublin'.

If anybody can help to shed some light on this for me with any information on George in Llandogo, I'd be very grateful.

Hope to hear from you

kind regards

Pete

George JOHNSTON 1805 London

Hi Slowhands

That was quick!

Thanks very much for this, I believe this is the 1871 Census entry for George in London.

My fault for not being clear as I have this reference.

Where I am stumped is how he came to be associated with Llandogo, was it between 1853 and 1871, or 1871 and 1881?

I can't find any reference to him in 1861 or 1881 and there is no information on when he came back to England after retirement (I'm hoping a visit to the British Library may help me here)

Thanks again for your help, much appreciated.

Pete
