EDWARDS, Harry, born 25 Nov 1884, Lydbrook (General)

by tkjensen @, Laramie, Wyoming, USA, Monday, April 18, 2011, 23:38 (4975 days ago)

Greetings,

I am looking for information on Harry Edwards, born November 25, 1884 in Lydbrook, and his wife Hannah, nee George, born abt 1884. Hannah is my great-grandfather's sister. Harry is the youngest child of Charles and Hannah Edwards, who were the innkeepers at the Bell Inn in Lydbrook for a period of time. I believe Charles and Hannah had 12 children in all.

In the Parish Records on this site I have found Harry's baptism record (East Dean Methodist), and the burial records for Charles (1909) and Hannah (1908) (Lydbrook Parish Chapel). I believe this Edwards family came to the Forest of Dean around 1870; I've found census records for the family showing them in the Forest in 1871, 1881, 1891, and 1901.

My questions, specifically, are these:

Is anyone out there researching this Edwards group? I've looked at the Edwards' postings on the forum, and I don't think they are the same line. I am specifically interested in learning whether Harry and Hannah stayed in the Forest after their marriage in April 1903, or if they immigrated to the United States or elsewhere.

Also, I subscribe to ancestry.com, and can only find England and Wales Census Records through 1901. Are there later versions of the England and Wales Census available on-line?

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide. This is a wonderful site, and I've been thrilled to find much helpful information on my Forest of Dean ancestors here!

Hello slowhands,

I do not know the names of any children of Hannah and Harry, just very recently discovered that Hannah married Harry, and so this line of research is new for me.

The George family you've listed in the 1891 census is indeed mine. In the 1901 census, Hannah's parents and siblings (but not Hannah) were listed in the Wales Census, rather than the England Census, although still West Dean, Holy Jesus Ecclesiastical Parish. I think the location is the same as in the prior census; did boundaries change?

In 1904, Hannah's parents and all her siblings immigrated to the United States. The oldest brother, Arthur, was my great grandfather, and he died young, in 1918. My family did not even know Hannah existed. Hannah's father, William George, left his family in the United States and emigrated back to England sometime before 1910, and reportedly (based on a headstone inscription in the United States) died in Lydbrook in 1923 (although I have not found a record of his death either).

Hannah's mother was Sarah Jane Howells, born in Kinver, and may be the daughter of James Howell(s)? and Hannah Poole, about whom there is a nice thread on this forum, but I haven't quite been able to pin that down; something seems off. But, if I recall, that family ended up in Wales, so that's a path I need to follow again.

I thought perhaps Harry's parents' involvement with the Bell Inn may have been an inducement for Harry and Hannah to stay in the Lydbrook area, but I see that Harry's mother, Hannah, left her estate to Thomas (oldest son, I believe), and I don't know that Harry's parents would have owned the Inn in any case, they may have just worked there.

Forgive the ramble, but I thought some context may help; you seem to be fantastically gifted in ferreting out info based on the smallest of clues!

Thank you...

Terri

(James) William GEORGE 1856 -1924 Anchorberry, Lydbrook

Wow! The "James" has thrown me for a loop (in this long bunch of NMI Georges), but the wedding record, birth record, and death record are remarkable; I will send off for the hard copies to see how that all comes together. I do believe that William and Elizabeth were William's parents (and Harriet his sister), and I had identified Baptism Record No. 117173 in the Parish Records as a likely match for William, but no indication of "James" there, so didn't come up with a corresponding birth record.

A couple of questions:

1. I have ordered from GRO in the past. Is this where I will order the birth, death, and marriage records you have referenced?

2. Can you direct me to the proper location to order parish records, if that's possible?

3. I'm wondering, where did you find a reference to William's death being inscribed on Sarah's headstone in the Cuba Cemetery in Illinois?

Many, many thanks, slowhands, for all this wonderful information!

I order from the GRO -https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

2. Can you direct me to the proper location to order parish records, if that's possible? The transcriptiopns are on this site - if its images that you want then best ask Graham Davidson

3. I'm wondering, where did you find a reference to William's death being inscribed on Sarah's headstone in the Cuba Cemetery in Illinois?
