Susannah Brain? (General)

by beav2012 @, Adelaide, South Australia, Tuesday, April 19, 2011, 08:57 (4971 days ago)

I was trying to find the marriage of Jane Ruck, at least that was her name in the 1841 census. Her mother was Susannah and her father was John Ruck, but when I tried to find her birth I couldn't find it anywhere. Then, in the 1861 census Susannah (now widowed) as a Granddaughter by the name of Margaret Harris staying with her. Seeing as I have marriages for her two other daughters, I figured that she must be Jane's child. (please correct me if I have this totally wrong).I then tried to find a marriage for Jane to a Harris. It wasn't until I did some searching that I found the marriage and it turns out that Jane was in fact a Brain and her father was John Brain. She was born in 1823 and baptised 27 Jul 1823, she then married Esau Harris on the 12 Nov 1842. It gives that she was a minor when she married but does not state that her father was deceased. If I am right with all of this then who is her mother, because her mother, my 4x Great Grandmother gives her name as Susannah Brain when she married John Ruck in 1826.

I concur with your research into Margaret and Esau Harris and Jane Brain.
Susannah is my 3* Great Gran via her daughter Letitia who was born only 3 months after Susannah married John Ruck. So I am still wondering if Letitia's father was John Brain or John Ruck; we will probably never find out.

I note your previous message about Letitia's husband Edmund Fletcher's will. It was unusual for a 'poor' collier to have a will. So you may be interested to know that a family member has told me that Edmund's son-in-law George Nelmes (Sarah's husband) was approached by a Mr Jones (maybe the witness to Edmund's will?) about forming a joint venture to purchase a small mine in Pillowell; I don't think it ever happened though! But it does seem as though they had managed to save some cash.

Perhaps this is too speculative to put on the Forum!

Letitia was my 3x Great Grandmother and as yet I have not found a birth record for her, only her baptism. Neither have I found any record regarding John Brain as yet.
I have read Edmunds will and I'm now in the process of transcribing it. It would also seem that his son William left a will and I will be sending off for that soon. Here is the probate notice:

Fletcher William died 16 Jan 1916. Probate 2 Feb 1916 to George Fletcher Collier and George Morgan Collier. Effects £137 os. 11d

Its pre 1837 - so this is likely to be the best / only record

Hi
I too am related to Susannah Brain - she is my 4x great grandmother. I am descended from her son Isaac John.

I have been searching for his family, but although I can find them in the censuses I cannot find any baptism records for his children, or birth records. His children were Evangelina Preece Phoebe Ruck, Ophelia Susannah Ruck, Perhosa (?) Ruck, Isaac John Ruck, Vara Lydia Ruck (my descendant), and later an adopted child Robert E Ruck.

I would also like to say thank you to this useful forum, as the answers on here have helped me understand the confusing Susannah Brain nee Clifton mystery.
