The Lodge, Nags Head, Coalway (General)

by admin ⌂, Forest of Dean, Wednesday, April 20, 2011, 00:19 (4971 days ago)

There is a stone at the lodge nags head at coalway, that was laid by the crown forester to commmemorate the 60th year of the reign of queen victoria. Another stone above one of the windows shows the house was built in 1810. I would like to research the history of the house and the families who lived in it.  Can you help in any way or point me in the right direction.

Nagshead Lodge, Coalway - John TYLER

by slowhands @, proud of his ancient Dean Forest roots, Wednesday, April 20, 2011, 06:52 (4970 days ago) @ admin

Built in 1810 it was locally known as Tylers Lodge after John Tyler who moved there in 1826 with his father. The family moved to Viney Hill, until the father dies in 1848 and John returned to Nagshead for the next 50 or so years. His son also a John took over from John senior - hence the Lodge also became known as Tylers lodge !

After about a mile the pleasant little woodman's house of
Nagshead Lodge is passed upon the left. The
young oak planted by the lodge's occupant of fourteen
years ago for Queen Victoria's Diamond
Jubilee, hardly does justice to the woodman's
loyalty. The tree—or is it a descendant perhaps
- hardly appears above the ground.

so who was in nagshead lodge between the dates 1841 to 1881, and who moved in after john Tyler died? is there a register or parish record that i should be loking at, anyone any ideas?

acording to the records of deaths at parkend chapel, when frank TYLER died in 1870 the house was referred to as NAGS HEAD LODGE. When albert edward TYLER died in 1879 according to the register the house was referred to as NAGS HEAD HILL LODGE. I'm presently trying to find out what happened to rosaetta TYLER abt 1847.

Are these Tylers related to John and Maria Tyler?

Are these Tylers related to John (born about 1849 died 1910) and Maria Tyler/Tylor(nee Rook) born 1852 and died 1923? They also lived at Lane End. They had at least 10 children and one of these was called Rosa. (I have all their dates of birth and who most of them married etc).

I dont know. Information I've gathered from that given initially by 'slowhands' is

John TYLER (abt 1926)married Mary PRESTON in 1845 (8 children have been listed)
William TYLER (son) dies 1854
Albert TYLER (son) dies 1879
In 1892 Sarah TYLER (daughter) marries William HAWKINS, John TYLER (son) marries Fanny ROGERS the same year. They leave the lodge.
Mary TYLER dies in 1895,and John TYLER dies in 1912 aged 85.
His son John dies in 1938 aged 81.
One of their daughters Eva monica TYLER (abt 1853) dies in 1931 coleford almshouses.
Do they sound familiar?

If they do could you tell me which family members evelyn m SMITH (abt 1891)(grand daughter) and Eva TYLER (daughter)(abt 1872) are related to?

They appear to be living at the lodge in the 1901 census, i am struggling to find out how they came to be living there. I do hope your Rosa is the one i am still looking for.

Who is Glen BEVIE?

by unknown, Sunday, May 08, 2011, 09:48 (4952 days ago) @ m p griffiths

Thankyou for that information.
At least the mystery of eva is resolved. I can add it to my timeline. As you can probably gather i'm new to all this, but learning quickly.

You wouldn't have any idea who glen BEVIE is would you. His name appears with the inscription and date the house was built 1810, i was given this information last week.

I don't know if he was the builder. Is this what they did when they built houses in those days?

How would i go about finding who lived in the house before the TYLERS and whilst they were at Viney Hill?
