Thomas LERIGO and Elizabeth COOK (General)

by Denise Thompson @, Sydney, Australia, Wednesday, April 20, 2011, 09:38 (4970 days ago)

I would like to make contact with any descendants of Thomas LERIGO and Elizabeth COOK, who married at Newland on 10 May 1788. Both parties signed, and witnesses were John COOK and Thomas BOND. It is possible that Thomas and Elizabeth had ten children in English Bicknor and Welsh Bicknor between 1788 and 1808.
I am particularly interested in learning whether Elizabeth was baptised at English Bicknor on 28 July 1765, the daughter of John Cook, and whether anyone knows the name of John's wife. It was possibly Sarah, maiden name not known.
Thanking you,
Regards,
Denise Thompson

I have a Mary Lerigo 1809 English Bicknor in my family tree as she married Edward Hall 1807 at Staunton 29 Jul 1828. They had 7 children that I know of including Ann Hall 1835 who married Henry Roberts 1830 at Christchurch 19 Nov 1853. They had 9 children that I know of including Evangeline Amanda Roberts 23 Mar 1867, she emigrated to USA 1913 with Lewis (Louis) Marfell 18 Dec 1866, who she lived with but can find no record of marriage.

Evangeline Amanda Roberts had previously been married to William Henry Morgan 1856 24 Mar 1888 Wesleyan Chapel,Monmouth, his second marriage, his first to Sarah Jemima Hussey 1858 at Drybrook 26 Jan 1876. William Morgan and Evangelina had 12 children between 1885 & 1907 and I believe she only took one with her to USA in 1913, leaving others that were still toddlers behind.

I assume this Mary Lerigo 1809 must be connected and would be interested in any information you have on her, unfortunately I cannot get access to the Parish Records today, I keep getting redirected to Google - are they taking over this site as well as the rest of the world !!

Slowhands - your entries have dates missing, can you correct this ?

Thank you Slowhands and Jim for your input. IGI has the date of marriage of Thomas Lerigo and Elizabeth Bennett as 24 September 1810.
Lerigo is such an unusual name, and perhaps there is a family link between all of them in the Forest of Dean area. Two Thomas Lerigos were born to William and Hannah Lerigo, the last in 1784, so it is possible he is the one to marry Elizabeth Bennett.
Whatever information I learn about the Lerigo family I will gladly share, but at the moment my focus is on Elizabeth Lerigo, nee Cook, her husband Thomas and their ten children, assuming they are all theirs and not those of another couple.
Regards,
Denise

If I were looking for current Lerigos, I might start in the Ross on Wye area, as there were a number of Lerigo families living there in the 40s, 50s and 60s and it could be assumed at least some are still in the area.

Thank you very much for this suggestion. I am currently in contact with a Lerigo descendant, and after Easter I should have learnt more.

I was interested to read the posts on the Lerigo family as in my first job in the early 1960s in Hereford, my supervisor was Phyllis Gwen Lerego who married George A Cornwell in 1958 (b 1910) later in life and had no children. I believe she came from Ross on Wye.
I have just checked up on her and found the following though I haven't got time to put the full Census entries and no doubt you can look them up if you need to.

Phyllis' parents were Percy Harold Lerego and Martha Annie Thackaway who married in Ross in 1907. Percy had at least six siblings so there may be issue from them.

Percy's parents were Thomas Lerego and Elizabeth Toomer who married in Ross in 1882.

Thomas's parents were Thomas (1815) and Sarah Greenaway in married in Ross in 1841.

There are several Leregos on the 1841 Census in the Ross/Monmouth areas born in the late 1700s but there is no knowing if any of them are parents of Thomas (1815).

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Thank you very much to Selby family and Margaret May for your contributions. I had hoped that Elizabeth Cook who married Thomas Lerigo was a sibling of my John Cook, but the signatures on his own marriage record and as a witness on Elizabeth's look significantly different.

Denise
