Birth Record(s) re Frederick Price (General)

by michael777 @, Friday, May 13, 2011, 19:02 (4947 days ago)

I am researching the life of my wife's great grandfather "Frederick Price" who came to the north of Ireland in 1905 after serving in the Northumberland Fusiliers.

According to Census returns for England(1891 and 1901) he was born in Lydney c 1864.

However there appears to be no reference to "Frederick" re (i)the Census 1871(England), (ii) his birth in the civil registration records and (iii) his birth in the Parish records(Forest of Dean).

He married in 1863 at Bath(spouse-Amelia Maule) and stated that his father was "Elijah",a deceased coalminer. There is some doubt as whether or not his statements re his father are correct.

Any informaton/assistance would be greatly appreciated.

On this website's Parish Records there are only four Frederick Price's Baptised in 1864 +/- 5 years.
Only one was Baptised in 1864 and that was March 6th so is presumably the abovementioned; Frederick Thomas Price at Hope Mansell, parents George & Eliza.

Further looking on this site's PR's, there are only two Elijah Price's recorded.
One was buried in 1827, so not Frederick's father.
T'other was Charles Elijah Price, Baptized in Tidenham in 1840, so very plausible.
Parents are William (carpenter) and Amelia !.
Hope this helps.

ps your original post has conflicting dates.
I presume you mean 1883 for his marriage to Amelia Maule in Bath, as per FreeBMD ?

Another relation ?

Frederick Price is also my great grandfather.
I have just recently started to research my family tree
I am Elizabeth Price born dundonald brother to Alister deceased 2015 and Vincent Cyril who lives in Canada.
I would be interested to know is your wife a daughter of Stanley Price who lived in dundonald and later in Greyabbey. My father was William
I would be interested in any info you have as I have very little

Elizabeth

Sorry for not getting back earlier as I have been very busy.

My late father in law (Jack Price -daughter Nancy) was your father's full cousin. I assume that you are aware that your grandfather, Uncle Vin(Vincent) had three brothers- Arthur Herbert b 4 Sept 1884(Bristol), Edward b 27 May 1891 (Cambridge Barracks Woolwich) and William George b
22 June 1895 (North Camp Farnborough). Their father was Frederick Price who appears to have been born at Lydney c 1864. To date I have not been able to trace records re his birth.

On 28 November 1883 at Bath he married Amelia Maule who was born at Nailsworth on 8 Jan 1863.

He served with the Northumberland Fushliers and then after a break re enlisted and served with the Royal Garrison Regiment. In 1905 he left the army and moved to Belfast.

If you have any information that would pin point his birth I would be grateful for same.

Hope the above is helpful.

Regards

The following birth record from Glos BMD Index:
Child Surname Child Forename Father Surname Mother Surname Mother's Former Name Year District Office Register Entry
POWER Frederick POWER 1863 Forest of Dean Chepstow, Lydney 10 275

This tells us that he was born to a single mother.

In 1871 Census Frederick is with Grandparents in Lydney:
185 James Power Head 60 1811 Male Swenham Gloucestershire England
185 Elizabeth Power Wife 59 1812 Female Bristol
185 Fred Power Grandson 7 1864 Male Lydney Gloucestershire England

Glos BMD Index lists the following children for James and Elizabeth:
Child Surname Child Forename Father Surname Mother Surname Mother's Former Name Year District Office Register Entry
POWER Emily POWER POWER PHILLIPS 1848 Forest of Dean Monmouth, Coleford 5 212
POWER Henry POWER POWER PHILLIPS 1841 Forest of Dean Chepstow, Lydney 2 85
POWER James POWER POWER PHILLIPS 1839 Forest of Dean Chepstow, Lydney 1 275
POWER Jane POWER POWER PHILLIPS 1844 Forest of Dean Chepstow, Lydney 3 244
POWER Mary Ann POWER POWER PHILLIPS 1843 Forest of Dean Chepstow, Lydney 2 452

We find this marriage for Emily:
Marriages Jun 1870
POWER Emily Clifton 6a 209
PRICE Henry Clifton 6a 209

and this is the couple in 1871 Census:
St Andrews, Bristol
Household schedule number Given Name Surname Relationship Age Estimated Birth Year Gender Birth City Birth County Birth Country
26 Henry Price Head 21 1850 Male Bristol
26 Emily Price Wife 23 1848 Female Coleford Gloucestershire England

Emily is born in Coleford and this is the baptism:
Year: 1848
Month: Feb
Day: 6
Parents_Surname: POWER
Child_Forenames: Emily
Fathers_Forenames: James
Mothers_Forenames: Elizabeth
Mothers_Surname:
Residence: Berry Hill
Occupation: Carpenter
Officiating_Minister: James Banks M.A. Perp[etual] Curate
Event: Baptism
Memoranda:
Notes:
Register_Reference: PFC82 IN 1/3
Page_Number: 13
Parish_Chapel: Christchurch

There does not appear to be a baptism for Frederick Power so the Birth Certificate would need to be obtained to confirm that Emily is the mother.

I am starting to wonder if Fred Power and Frederick Price were one and the same.

The evidence so far suggests this. There are many examples of illegitimate children adopting the married surname of the mother.
