Searching for parents of Sarah Llewellen born approx 1803 (General)

by nessie99 @, Tuesday, May 17, 2011, 17:26 (4943 days ago)

Sarah was born somewhere in Gloucestershire about 1803. She never married and had the following children all with no father’s name on the baptism record:

Hannah b 1822 Churcham d 1903 Clearwell,
Samuel b 1827 Westbury on Severn (surname Welling on baptism record),
Thomas b 1830 d 1833 both in Westbury on Severn (surname Wellin on baptism record),
Keziah b 1833 Gloucester St Johns m Samuel Poyner in 1864 d 1912,
Henry b 1837 Churcham and
William b 1846 d 1903 both in Westbury on Severn

In the 1841 census Sarah (35) is living in Westbury on Severn with another Sarah Llewellen (age 65 possibly her mother), Samuel, Keziah and Henry. Hannah is a servant living in Huntley.

I believe the older Sarah dies in 1848 in Westbury age 72 which would mean she was born about 1776. I have the death certificate and there is a matching burial record in the Westbury parish records. The informant on the death certificate is an Ann Llewellyn who I haven’t been able to connect with this family yet. The death certificate also says Sarah is the widow of Edward Llewellen.

The younger Sarah seems to die in Jan 1851 age 48 which would indicate a birth about 1803. The informant on her death certificate is a Jane Lane who post 1851 becomes the housekeeper of William Ayland. The relevance of this is that in the 1851 census Hannah, Samuel, Henry and William are living with William Ayland in Newland. Their surname has been written as Willen.

I have been searching for Sarah’s baptism record in order to confirm whether the older Sarah is her mother and hence her father was an Edward Llewellen. Despite several trips to the Gloucester Records Office I have not been able to find a baptism record for Sarah. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do next?

Huntley marriage records

by nessie99 @, Monday, March 18, 2013, 09:22 (4272 days ago) @ nessie99

On the Familysearch website I found the marriage of Thomas Partridge to Hezia (should be Keziah) Llewellyn on 29 February 1852 in Huntley. I have tried to find this marriage in the Huntley parish records on this website without any success.

I have all the census records for Thomas and Keziah and from the 1861 census onwards they are living as man and wife. Is there a reason why this marriage is missing from the Huntley records?

Huntley marriage - Keziah LLEWELLYN 1852

by nessie99 @, Monday, March 18, 2013, 10:10 (4272 days ago) @ slowhands

Thanks for your reply Slowhands.

I probably should have mentioned that there are 2 Keziah Llewellyn's. The marriage you have found is for a younger Keziah, she is born in 1833 and is my gg grandmother.

The marriage I was looking for in 1852 was for a Keziah llewellyn born about 1811 / 1812. I am trying to find out if the two are related. Both these marriages are on the Familysearch website.

NO BDM cross ref found....

We will need to look at the Huntley transcription records - I have looked at a version of the transcribed data from 2006 and in 1852 only 1 marriage is recorded in the file - this seems rather odd. Perhaps a page of the register was missed or missing, although the transcribed page nos etc look OK.

From memory Huntley was one of the earliest transcript files that I worked on with Dave - late 2005 / early 2006 ? -- no surprises that Ruardean was the first datasets that we manipulated from word to excel and then via a few steps into the databases that we access today

Thanks Slowhands. I am really interested to know if Keziah's father is named on the parish register. I haven't been able to find the GRO reference for this marriage either despite browsing the images for 1852 otherwise I could order the marriage certificate.

Sarah LEWELLING nee GREEN 1776 -1848 Churcham/Hartpury

by nessie99 @, Monday, March 18, 2013, 13:19 (4272 days ago) @ slowhands

Thanks for your time and effort Slowhands

I had come to the same conclusion re Sarah Green and Edward Welling but wasn't sure how Sarah Green ended up marrying in Churcham if she was born in Hartpury. I haven't found a baptism record for Sarah born about 1803 which was my original enquiry last year.

Sarah goes on to have a daughter Keziah in 1833 and this Keziah marries Samuel Poyner in 1864 in Huntley. Before her marriage Keziah has a son James Llewellyn and he is my great grandfather.

So is it possible the other Keziah born about 1811 / 1812 is the sister of Sarah born to Edward and Sarah? And why is the only evidence of her marriage to Thomas Partridge on the Familysearch website?

Edward LEWELLING Churcham/Hartpury

by slowhands @, proud of his ancient Dean Forest roots, Monday, March 18, 2013, 13:34 (4272 days ago) @ nessie99

Churcham and Harpury are "adjacent" parishes probably separated by the River Leadon and Tibberton - so I would not worried by either church being used:-)

Edward and Ann WELLING ( or variation !) are also in the area

I tried to find a marriage between Ann and Edward yesterday without any luck. So many variations of Llewellyn but I haven't seen Tellin before!! I notice there is a Katherine Llewellyn as a witness. Wonder were she fits in??
