Gloucester to Ledbury Canal (General)

by chrishowell @, Coleford, Gloucestershire, Sunday, May 22, 2011, 20:31 (4941 days ago)

Searching for any information on the former Lock-Keepers at Oxenhall, Newent. I recall my mother saying that her Grandmother - Ruth Elliott (Roberts) had lived in the cottage at the lock.
Any help or information appreciated

Thanks m p g for the reply. I hold much of that plus the birth of Ruth's eldest daughter Mary Louise who was my Grandmother. I'll work through what you have given me and add it to the rest. If you come up with anything about the Canal then I would appreciate it
Thanks again

Chris,
On the unlikely offchance you wern't already aware, these may help

1. this website's historians may be worth contacting
http://www.h-g-canal.org.uk/index.htm

2. there are a couple of books on the subject, probably in your local library
"The Hereford & Gloucester Canal | Ledbury Railway" by David Bick, see extracts,
http://www.herefordshire.gov.uk/htt/628.aspx
http://www.oakwoodpress.co.uk/books/books_he-hu.htm

and perhaps less relevant in your instance
"Over & Over Again, 750 Years Of Change At Over" by Nigel Bailey, available on a wellknown auction website etc.

Hope this helps, good luck.
