Thomas James b1821 c born herefordshire (General)

Hi all Im hoping that someone maybe able to help me, I am new to this geneology but I have managed to get a bit of information regarding most of my family except, Thomas James where I have hit a brick wall. Although my family came from monmouthshire Thomas James b1821c states in census 1851 - 1881 hes from Herefordshire, his address in 1851 was in christchurch monmouthshire, where he married Sarah (i think stephens)43 caerleon rd christchurch. Aged 34 (1817 est birth)from Hereford.
1861 The family have moved to Moorgate farm Undy, where they remained. In this census hes from whitchurch, herefordshire and says his age is 40 (1821 est birth)
1871 Family still at moorgate Thomas says hes from Garanow (or Garanew)age 53 (1818 est birth)
But my question is where did he come from? I have no knowledge of the areas so dont even know if they are close. Also having a very common name is also tough. His occupations have been shepherd and agr lab.
My family didnt realise he came from herefordshire way they assumed he was from inner wales...
Hopefully someone can shed some light on this prob or have the same family interest.

Ganarew / Whitchuch / Lewstone/ Crockers Ash area are all consistent i.e. within a 0ne mile radius of Crockers Ash.
