Henry GRAIL born c1796, lived in Alvington and Woolaston (General)

by sgrail, Sunday, June 25, 2006, 14:58 (6726 days ago)

The furthest I have gone back on my Grail family tree is cir 1796 when Henry Grail was born. He was born in Malmesbury according to the census but he lived in Alvington, Woolaston on other Census. I did find some Grail's who were down as non Conformists, but I'm struggling to find any record's before the census that have Grail on them.I have look at the Chepstow Parish Records and No Grail's on there. Can any one help.

Also does anyone know or have heard of an Edith Violet Grail born 1920 at 4 Whitsun Court in Chepstow who became Edith Violet Smith and Her Children Shirley, Kathleen,Brenda,David and James, all with a surname of Smith also Edith had a brother Edwin Grail born 1927(married Ivy Cooke) and a sister Elsie born 1924(married John F Smith). Edith Violet's father was William Edgar Grail and her mother was Edith May Howell (Edith May died in the Forest of Dean in 1993). I have been in contact with people from all branches of my tree except this branch.

Any help or information anyone can offer I would appreciate it.

Sarah

PS. This is a Great Site if I wasn't told by a friend about it I would not have been in contact with Mr Roger Griffiths who over the last week or so has provided me with a lot of information regarding my tree for which I am gratefull. Thank you Roger.

My guess is that your prior GRAYELL/GREYELL/GRAYLE/GRAYL/GRAIL roots are back in the Wiltshire/Gloucestershire borders around Malmesbury and Chippenham

you might get more joy on a Wiltshire based board ( thats not to be taken as negative, just our passion and strength is mainly with thic Vorest !)

i.e.

http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/ENG-WILTSHIRE/2005-01/1105986481

I am interested in the Grail family also. My ancestor was Henry Grail, born
in Malmesbury c. 1792. Henry married a Mary ?? who was born in Chippenham
and had the following children: Richard born c.1812-3 in Chippenham, Jane
born 1820-1 in Chippenham or Langley, Worthy born c. 1829 in Malmesbury,
and Henry born 1836 in Westport. This family moved to Alvington/Woolaston,
Gloucestershire and is found in the census records of 1841 to 1881. Worthy
Grail shows up on the 1841 census in this area but not on the 1851 or 1861.
He is listed as "Gorthy" on the "41 but I believe this to be an error. He
then shows up on th 1871 as married to an Elizabeth who was born in
Aulburton.

Would this family be related to yours ?

Thanks for the link I'll take a look. Yes I know that Henry was from Malmesbury but the wiltshire site I have been on states it has parish record's but everything is still under contruction so I have had No luck. All the rest of the Grail's are from F of D, Chepstow etc. From my research into my husband's family I have found that according to the birth and marriage records that over 90% of Grail's on the records are descendant's of Henry Grail born in Malmesbury.

by sarah @, Gwent, Monday, July 03, 2006, 08:54 (6719 days ago) @ slowhands

Thank you everyone for your help. The information you have all given me has been great.

This one is a Tester because I haven't got anything to go on only this and not sure if Sedbury is part of the Forest but here goes.

in the 1950/60's a Doctor Phillips lived in Sedbury does anyone remember him??? His House was just over the bridge from Chepstow.

I told you I didn't know a lot didn't I.

Henry GRAIL born c1796, lived in Alvington and Woolaston

by gallois, Wednesday, May 13, 2009, 12:44 (5674 days ago) @ sgrail

Hi Sarah,
You can see from my posts that I am researching Matilda Grail who married my 2Xuncle Charles Eason in 1900. There is some speculation that Matilda may have been known as Kate, daughter of William and Harriet Grail and born c. 1883
Do you have any information on this?
Thanks
