Priscilla BALDWIN - Who were her ancestors? (General)
by isherwop , Saturday, June 25, 2011, 03:00 (4904 days ago)
At the time of the 1841 census Moses ROBERTS and Priscilla were living at Harry Hill (now Harrow Hill) with their five children. Births of four of their children are recorded in the Drybrook parish records. Moses is a coal miner. Although I have yet to confirm it it appears almost certain that Priscilla died at Nailbridge in 1846. An IGI submission by a LDS member states that Priscilla's maiden name is BALDWIN and that she married Moses at Abinghall on 26 Feb 1827. Jim Ashton also mentions in Forum that Moses married married Priscilla BALDWIN. I cannot find any record of this marriage or Priscilla's ancestors. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Peter I.

Since posting this message I have found her marriage details. Her name was mispelt but I should have looked more thoroughly but I am still interested in her ancestors.

Thanks Slowhands, I thought I might get a rapid response from you, but I did not expect one quite as quickly. Thanks particularly for the death record for Moses. Now I know why I could not find him in the later census records.

Hi Isherwop
I couldn't reply as quickly as Slowhands, I was actually in Yellowstone when you posted this. I just had a quick look at the Forum and this one stood out.
Thanks Slowhands for the details. The marriage was the one I had for Moses and Priscilla. I didn't however have the burial details. I was at first a little confused as I have 1841 as the death of Moses Roberts father also Moses Roberts 1773/1841 - his burial on 31st Jul 1841 Drybrook, his wife Mary Hayward 1771/1841 was buried 17 May 1841 also at Drybrook. A sad year for them.
Unfortunately, this doesn't answer the original question regarding the ancestors of Priscilla Baldwin. A question I too would like the answer to, having 467 Baldwin's, it would be nice to make a connection.

If you use the Advance Search for witnesses (and look for a Priscilla or Moses ROBERTS)
There is a marriage at Hope Mansell - 29 November 1834
when
Edward MEEK - the Hundred of St Briavels
married
Mary BALDWIN - the Hundred of St Briavels
witnesses: Moses ROBERTS and Priscilla ROBERTS
If you look at the 1841 census, there is a Mary age 27 Ind (c1814) (translated as MECK) living with them at St Briavels - and a Milsom Hale BALDWIN age 9
----
FOD records
Baptism at Newland - 19 July 1832
Milsom Hale BALDWIN - father not stated

Milson Hale HALE
father's name: Milson

Thanks for your help. You have taught me a new trick - how to use the witness option in the wedding search category to obtain additional information. Mary is without doubt Priscilla's sister and the story of her illegitimate son fascinating and improbable if I had not read it myself. I always thought you were only baptised once but it weems in Mary's case she was baptised twice so that her Fathers name could be added to her name. She than later marries someone else. Its all very interesting but unfortunately has not led me any closer to Priscilla's ancestors.

Gloucestershire Record Office may also hold information of Milson HALE/BALDWIN
re (Born out of Wedlock) - and this in turn may give you more information of Mary BALDWIN and her background (or time in the workhouse)
The Gloucestershire Records Office Genealogical Database - show a Milson HALE, age 25, Collier Ruardean, Goal - 15 October 1834 (On Ancestry also, not guilty of Larceny)

Jim, Thanks for your message. You will have seen from the contribution from mpgriffiths that we have discovered a sister for Priscilla but still no parents. I have recently requested two Moses Roberts wills dated 1842 from the Gloucester Archives Office. They are both from the Harry Hill Ruadean area and but I am not too optimistic they will be of relevance as I don't think coalminers normally had wills but if they contain anything useful I will let you know.
