Chieftain,

I think you will find that they are two different Georges. The George who married Gladys Bright was considerably younger, and his father's name was George, not James. I wasn't able to find a Hawkins/James marriage in the FOD records in the correct time period. I have dismal luck with ancestry's version of the BMD index, so perhaps someone more skilled will be able to narrow it down for you.

Additionally, it wouldn't have left George Lanwarne Hawkins much time to find a bride if he were shipped from Calgary to France in 1915, to marry in England that same year. Not impossible, but perhaps unlikely.

Also intersting to note that his father was a non-conformist minister and G.L. lists his religious affiliation as the Church of England.

That was taken directly from a digital copy of his attestation papers. It was hand written (my grandfather's were typed), so his sister's initial could have been an F. rather than a J., but it looked like a "J".

The birth dates are quite different, so my guess is that George Lanwarne Hawkins and George Lawrence Hawkins are two different people.

Keep in mind, also, that this was the information the soldier was providing on enlistment. For instance, my grandfather listed my grandmother, Patience, by her nickname, which was Nellie. Additionally, if your man were being formal, if his sister is Mrs. JQ Public, it's not that her initials are JQ, it's that her husband is John Q Public.

I may be confusing this with another family, but wasn't there an earlier thread listing the children born in Cornwall? I would try cross referencing the sisters to see if any of them married a man with the surname James . . .

The names here look strangely familiar to me when I compare them with the information on this website:

JAMES ELLIS HAWKINS and George Lawrence were famous preachers in their time.

(My great-grandfather being that George Lawrence.)
