Henry John HAWKINS (b circa 1835) (General)

by io2324 @, Thursday, July 14, 2011, 14:42 (4885 days ago)

Is anyone able to help me locate the parents of my 2x great grandfather Henry (or in some records Hendry) John Hawkins? I have a number of fragments of possible information but nothing conclusive. Indeed the situation I find myself in is something akin to a string vest, lots of holes tied together with something pretty insubstantial... :-)

As far as I know is he was born around 1835 in Gloucestershire and was a police officer. Looking at census records there is a Henry John Hawkins with parents Thomas (b 1802) and Mary Ann (b 1801)and siblings James (1821), Thomas (1825), Arabella (1826), Ellen (1833) and Emma (1839), however there seems to be no record of Thomas and Mary Ann getting married.

Unfortunately there are no records of any Henry John Hawkins being baptised around that time.

There is a record of a Henry Hawkins (but not Henry John) being baptised 4th June 1835 (this site's record number 114933) with parents Richard and Eleanor. Several family trees on sites such as ancestry.co.uk list this family link (and there are census records confirming it) but none link him to the middle name John or have details of any of his descendants I have in my records.

So to sum up - I believe that either my Henry John (parents Thomas and Mary Ann) is correct but there are no records (or none I can find) or maybe Henry John is just plain Henry (with parents Richard and Eleanor) or of course perhaps neither!

If anyone can shed any light on this, even any suggestions which might help me show any or all of the options are wrong (so I can eliminate them) I would be extremely grateful.

Thanks

Ian

Thanks for this. I have seen the 1871 Glamorgan census entry and I am pretty sure that relates to Henry John once he married (that is where I got the sometimes "Hendry" info in my original post - that form of the name occurs in other places as well). His 8 year old son Henry (also actually a Henry John b 1863) is my grandfather. Out of interest, the Henry John carries on down the line to my maternal uncle Henry John Hawkins (b 1904). It stops there as he only had daughters, none of whom I assume would have appreciated being called Henry :-)

Not sure about Frank Henry, but the Henry who is nephew to Joseph Land is new to me - will look into that!

Just found that a Joseph Land married Ann Hawkins 18th April 1826 (FOD record# 97162). So, Henry Hawkins (nephew) does seem to fit.

Hence, if I can locate any siblings of Ann, then one may be the missing father.

Thanks for this!

Ian,

I also have a "string vest"! My notes show Henry John HAWKINS born @ 1835 s/o Richard (1) and Elinore HAWKINS. Info that was passed along to me includes this memo of the 1851 Census that shows Henry, age 15, as a coal miner. The name Henry John, was given to me be a family member, but I have NO hard evidence of name.

1851 CENSUS
HAWKINS Richard (1) 51 Coal Miner Newland
Ellenor 61 West Dean
Ellenor 24 West Dean
Richard (2) 21 Coal Miner West Dean
Elizabeth 18 Scholar West Dean
Henry 15 Coal Miner West Dean
Amelia 1 Grand Daughter West Dean

IF I can be of any help or you would like to compare more notes, please feel free to contact me via e-mail!

Thanks. Will get in touch by email. Your Henry is one of the alternative options I have but my concern is (as you allude to) there is no evidence of him being Henry John.

I have been looking for information on this Henry John HAWKINS! He was a first cousin to my Great-grandmother, Harriet Ann HAWKINS Morgan. I have considerable information about the HAWKINS extended family. I would love to share information, IF you are interested!!!

Since posting this another new forum topic has been posted 32960 which appears to show the marriage of Thomas and Mary Ann. Looks like this could be the parents I am looking for.

For info, it also links back to an older 2009 posting 18429 which adds some useful detail.

Still not sure if these are my Henry John's parents, but thanks to Isherwop and MP Griffiths (and everyone who contributed to the 2009 entry) for their postings.

Looking at the 1881 Census, Glamorgan - Lanquick

+ extra children from 1871 census

Tom D HAWKINS - son - unmarried, age 36
Sarah E HAWKINS - daughter - 28
Mary E HAWKINS - daughter - 26

Only by having the information on the mother's maiden name - can we try and find the correct marriage for Henry HAWKINS to Ann ?

and hopefully find the correct birth for Henry HAWKINS born c1863 Lane End, Gloucestershire

this should give Henry's Snr. father's name - and take out the guess work.

Just made a breakthrough - thanks to a link to a document on the FOD site (thanks Cynthia!):

http://www.forest-of-dean.net/downloads/Miscellaneous/Mary_Evans_Ancestors_Report.pdf

and comments here and elsewhere in the forum it is now obvious that the reason I could not find Henry is that his family were protestant dissenters.

Looked him up on BMD Registers.co.uk and there he is with his parents and grandfather.

Thanks to everyone who helped me get to this point.
