Mary Cowmeadow nee Tingle (General)

by Carole Lewis @, Monday, July 25, 2011, 09:10 (4874 days ago)

I am still searching for the birth and death dates of Mary Tingle who married James Cowmeadow in 1807 at Newland. It occurred to me that she may have remarried. There is a widow Mary Cowmeadow who married a James Wilson on 1 Nov 1834 in Ledbury. Does anyone know any reason why this could not be Mary?
Many thanks

Perhaps he passed away "soon" after fathering Cornelius born Jan 1822 ?...

Mary COWMEADOW & Family, Ruardean c1830s

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Tuesday, July 26, 2011, 01:53 (4873 days ago) @ Jefff

I should have mentioned that between say 1810 and 1850 the FoD site shows 20 PRs for James Cowmeadows, 8 being Baptisms and 6 Burials. There are 5 Baptisms in Ruardean alone stretching back to 1737.
Throughout Dean the site shows Baptisms for 29 James Cowmeadows !.

Between 1810 & 1850 the site shows 14 PRs for Mary Cowmeadows, 10 are Baptisms. Curiously there are also a total of 29 Baptisms of Mary Cowmeadows on the site !.

Hence plenty of room for errors when searching on a general basis particularly farther afield into say Herefordshire !

Mary COWMEADOW & Family, Ruardean c1830s

by Carole Lewis @, Tuesday, July 26, 2011, 09:14 (4873 days ago) @ Jefff

Sorry to be slow to come back after all these excellent observations as I am not well at the moment and will need to trawl through past messages to prove my points but I believe this Mary Cowmeadow being referred to is the wife of William Cowmeadow James' brother. My Mary's court appearances suggest she was born around 1790. I would love to be able to access the work house records but I think they have disappeared.

I am sure that the Mary Slowhands refers to has been claimed by another branch of the family. What I need is a tree from a good old fashioned bible!

William & Elizabeth COWMEADOW & Family, Ruardean c1780s

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Tuesday, July 26, 2011, 11:54 (4873 days ago) @ Carole Lewis

Hi Carole,
I'm sorry to hear you've been ill, I know the feeling which is how I took up this hobby and found this site 8 months ago, I hope you start feeling better soon. The Mary Cowmeadow I researched above is indeed the wife of James as surely the numerous Baptism Records show?. I suspect James to indeed be William's brother; certainly within the Ruardean PRs of that 1830s period I did keep seeing another family headed by William (and his wife Elizabeth if I recall correctly ??) who I took to be closely related. As I said, there's so many different James's & Marys & Williams etc within the area and time period discussed so its easy to get them confused perhaps, however by methodical research they can be untangled, as I believe I have done correctly for James & Mary. It's also interesting that you mention her Court appearances, what was this for and how did you discover this ?, most intriguing, and the Workhouse which I touched on too. I presumed she found herself there after James' passing especially with so many mouths to feed ?.

I'm sure that some more carefull and leisurely study of the PRs by your good self will confirm this probable link.

Perhaps this is brother William, father also William(grr).
(Please note this is a suggestion after only a VERY quick look at the PRs):

As I said earlier, continued thorough methodical research such as this, but looking at all this periods PRs for the Ruardean area will I'm sure allow you to place all the family branches within their correct context. Its just bad luck for you the family wern't too imaginative/original when it came to naming their offspring !

Happy Hunting !

James & Ann COWMEADOW & Family, Ruardean c1760s

by Carole Lewis @, Saturday, July 30, 2011, 16:55 (4869 days ago) @ Jefff

Hi there Jefff,
I believe that the earlier James and Ann are the parents of my James Cowmeadow. I have a copy of both the James's wills. Senior left his property between James and William and there was a great deal. Excellent provision was made for his wife, Ann. Most of the property was in Tibbs Green but he left William an orchard in Herefordshire. Junior James left his property between his sons, again provision for his mother appears excellent but nothing for his wife Mary.
Following the death of Elizabeth the family become quite notorious and most of the children appear in court mainly for stealing food. Mary and her daughter Eliza appear accused of stealing geese but are acquitted. There are physical descriptions. You will find information about William,Cornelius and Josiah Cator Cowmeadow in previous threads on this site with all the details of William's transportation. Through Ancestry I discovered one of his daughters married the son of a slave trader! There is no end to it.
The real mystery for me is how this apparent "comfortable" family should become so destitute. Junior James was even able to sign his name on his will although Mary Tingle was illiterate. The only child of the family who steered clear of the law appears to be my greatx3 grandmother Hester who later married John Morgan a neighbour in Moorwood.

Of course I could be wrong.

by Carole Lewis @, Friday, September 16, 2011, 17:28 (4821 days ago) @ roderick Wheatstone

Thank you Rod that information backs up my view that there were two Mary Cowmeadows who are easily confused as they were near contemporaries. William's wife is easier to track, James' wife is slippy in and out of workhouses and court.
