Absalom VAUGHAN, Pludds Court (General)

by bertha, Sunday, July 02, 2006, 23:05 (6719 days ago)

In the 1881 Census my Great Grandfather Absalom Vaughan (Pludds Court) is listed as a 'publican and farmer'. I have all the Census records on the family, but was wondering would there be a list of publicans and the pubs they owned/ran etc? I'm trying to find the name of the pub and if it still exists

Thanks

Take a look at a clipping titled 'Littledean Licensing Notice 1887'
Absalom Vaughan is listed as a holder of an out-door licence at the Pludds.
He was also fined for selling beer contrary to his license. <smile>

May

Could you also share the information about the pub with us as I am sure many other people would be interested. Some of my Watkins line lived at the Pludds.

My thanks to you David for sorting out my "email the board hiccup", as I can now post my answer to the board.

The information, including an old photo can be found by following the LINKS (from this site) to Sungreen, - Cinderford Pages, - Ruardean section, where it is listed as Royal Oak.

There is a fairly modern photo and some details about two brewery ownerships from the past etc, in Heather Hurley's book Pubs of the Forest. I can borrow-my-book-back and look it up if anyone needs the info.

The "Bag of Nails" is now a private house, off Pludds Court Road.

Royal Oak, GL17 9UG
In the 1891 petty sessional divisional records it is listed without having a name. In the 1903 book it is simply listed as the Royal Oak, East Dean.

There is a Royal Oak Road, the Pludds GL17 9UG.
