Yes Slowhands and thanks, I saw that too but unless I'm mistaken (probably !), I didnt read anything specific re Samuel or his "gent" status.

Sounds like a good job for a retired miner ?, or maybe not ?

My grandfather died when I was very young after a lifetime down the pits in Lydbrook area, he was very ill with the usual dust-related illness I think yet still reached 68.
Apparently he'd previously wanted to become landlord of the Malt Shovel in Ruardean, but my grandmother stopped that idea pdq !
This was because his father before him had also been landlord there but he died young aged just 46, don't know why (yet).... but...?
