Joseph COOPEY born c1790 Churcham (General)

by Coopey ⌂ @, Monday, August 15, 2011, 22:58 (4852 days ago)

Hello all,

I am looking for ancestors of Joseph COOPEY born 1787-1790 in Churcham.

Marriage Record gives no details of parents.

Info:
Married Mary HALFORD of Bulley on 15 OCT 1811 in Churcham.
Had at least three sons Joseph COOPEY b1814, John COOPEY b1816 and William COOPEY b1826, all in Churcham (so would also be interested if anyone knows of any offspring in that 10 year gap too.)
1841 Census gives address of 'Birdwood' in Churcham for Joseph's widow Mary who is now a 'Cider Retailer'.
Joseph's occupation on Joseph jr's baptism record is 'Dealer', Joseph jr's occupation in 1941 is 'Pig Dealer'- I wonder if this is continuing his father's business?

If anyone has any information, it would be greatly appreciated.
Also if any descendants of Joseph (jr/b1814) are looking for information I may be able to help with that.

Hi M,

Thanks for the probate info- had not seen that before.
Took a while to sort that one out, huh?

I have seen the other Coopey thread you have linked, and a few others on here, but can not connect them to this Joseph Coopey. I am guessing that Joseph 1790 is related to the eldest John COOPEY mentioned in the thread you link- they may even be brothers. But I can't find anything to link them. Unless I'm missing something?

COOPEY - Churcham + Frances BARNES, of Newent

As Probate for Joseph COOPEY took place decades after his (death 21 March 1833) -? is the burial of Joseph COOPEY at Churcham 25 March 1834 age 46 - (c1788) your line? - the month is correct, he would have been buried a few days after his death, it's just the year that's out by 12 months.

Have you seen on the 'net' an extract from the Berrow's Worcester Journal - outlining the events September 1783, when 'Mr John COOPEY of Churcham, in the County of Gloucester, was robbed by a man' who had hired himself as a servant under the name of John Jones

Tried to do the link, but can't - if you google the highlighted sentence above, this brings up the article (Newpaper Transcripts) or 'Coopey Grazier Churcham'

'On Sunday night last the house of Mr John Coopey of Churcham, in the county of Glocester, grazier, was robbed by a man who had hired himself as a servant, under the name of John Jones;and who rose in the night, opened the door, and introduced another person into the house, armed with a knife and an ax, demanding his money; and opening a box they took out £91 8s. 6d * in three purses, two of which were made of leather, the other of canvas; they took also a silver watch marked J.C. both on the outside and inside; three silver buckles, a hat, and other wearing apparel, particulary three shifts belong to a servant. At Ledbury on Monday, Jones bought a chain to the watch, a new coat of a dark mixture, and a new pair of leather breeches'

followed by:

William White a tanner at Newent, in that County, charged on violent suspicion of murdering Frances Barnes, who kept the Sun public house in Newent.

FOD records - Burial at Newent - 12 September 1783

Frances BARNES - Burial, Murdered - Memoranda : WIDOW

and FOD records, Marriage at Newent 20 January 1783

William WHITE JNR, (occupation Tanner) married Ann HOOPER, Spinster, at Newent, by Licence

witnesses Wm HOOPER and Sam WOOD Jnr.

So, the Berrow's Worcester Journal, seems to have reported events in the FOD.

* how much would that be in today's money?

this website starts at 1830

http://www.measuringworth.com/ukcompare/index.php (and in 1830 this would equate to £7,230)

COOPEY - Churcham

Another interesting piece of info! Thanks again.
I always imagine it was a little bit boring in Churcham back then- but obviously interesting things happened!

Another user has emailed yesterday, suggesting that Joseph is a descendant of a William Coopey, so I think the link is a generation or two above, and the different sets of Coopeys are related (as I assumed all along).

Looks like the John Coopey above is the uncle of Joseph c1790.
And Joseph c1790 is the great uncle of the Charles Coopey that is the subject of the linked thread.

Still got a bit of info to assimilate and marry up, but it's looking like a good match.

Note:::
John Coopey's birth year should read 1817

John Coopey born 1816 was born to John and Mary Coopey of Churcham.
John Coopey born 1817 was born to Joseph and Mary Coopey of Churham.

Looking at Gloucestershire Marriage CD pre 1800 (not FOD) - COOPYE/COOPY/COOPEY - seems to be based the other side of the Severn i.e. Dursley/Cam/Churchdown/Charfield/North Nibley

e.g.CHURCHDOWN (family names?)

- John COOPEY/Elizabeth HERBERT - 10 June 1757

- Joseph COOPEY/Mary HONE - 22 September 1763

- Richard COOPEY/Elizabeth GAZE - 20 October 1760

- did they wander down to Churcham.... (7 miles)

no more male COOPEY marriages at Churchdown after 1763

1 female marriage

Ann COOPEY/Nicholas WRENFORD - 24 April 1758

and one later marriage

Elizabeth COOPEY/James HOOPER (of Cheltenham) - 11 May 1789

FOD records

Marriage at Bulley - 8 December 1734

William COOPY

Grooms residence: CHURCHDOWN

married

Sarah HAMPTON

Brides Residence: CHURCHAM in Diocese of Gloucester
