I am looking for information of the death of James Williams who married Sarah Worgan at Bristol in 1812. They lived at St Briavels. I know Williams is a common name and I have found a Sarah Williams, widow, aged 55, in the 1841 census, but I can't find James' death.

Thank you for the response to my query dated August 2011. Sorry for the delay in responding, unfortunately moving home put all other interests on hold.
I am also looking for the burial of James Williams who drowned in February 1899, when the small working vessel he was on floundered during the gales, coming out of Newport. He was married and had a wife and children in Bristol, but there was no mention of his burial in the newspapers of that time. There was a large article referring to the burial of the other three crew.

Perhaps they didn't recover his body?

Do you have a birth hence age for James Senior ?
As he was married in 1812 I guess he was born 1794 at the very latest ?.
His widow was aged 55 in 1841 suggesting she was born abt 1786.
This is the only St Braivels James Williams Burial that seems possible

Hence he was born abt 1749, so probably a generation before your James ?.
Re James Junior I assume he was born at least 1875 if not before, so aged at least 24 when buried but probably older ? (Clues re age, such as the ages of his wife and children in Bristol would be very helpfull here, please ?).
This is the nearest Baptism Record on this site's Records, but as you'll know there are a lot of James Williams in the Parish since the 1700s until now;

Its reasonable this James would follow his father onto the water.
If this is our James he'd have been aged 42 when buried, so not unreasonable at all.
However searching FreeBMD for a Bristol Burial in 1899 only gives this one, perhaps registered a few months late and maybe the wrong age ?.
Surname Given Name Age District Volume Page Transcriber
Deaths Sep 1899
Williams James 57 Bristol 6a 39 Sukie
I would suggest it more likely he was buried at Newport( the ships home port), as this possible Burial shows ?
Surname Given Name Age District Volume Page Transcriber
Deaths Mar 1899
Williams James 42 Newport Mon. 11a 107 nahills
(NB By March this means the Burial was registered in the quarter to March 1899)
Could Newport have been considered his original home area ?. There are many instances of close ties between Forest families and Newport/Monmouthshire, I suggest more so than Bristol.
There are not any other likely Burials registered for any James Williams in Bristol or Newport at this time.
You say the other burials were reported in newspapers, where was this ? Perhaps this was from a different area than James was from/buried ??
Or perhaps his body hadnt been recovered by then ??
To help you we need any additional clues you have, please.

James Williams born 1857 St Briavels married Julia Taylor Bryant in Bristol July 1888. He was a mate on the Netham and drowned, along with the all the crew on 11th February 1899, near East Usk Lighthouse. Nash. The bodies were all retrieved and lay in Nash church. The inquest was carried out by the coroner for South Monmouthshire on 15th February 1899 and a death certificate issued from Caerleon.
I have a copy of the newspaper report of the burials of John Harris, James Hodges and John Pickord, which took place in Bristol, but although James was married and residing in Bristol, there is no mention of his burial having taken place in Bristol. I can only think that because he was reported to have come from 'Chepstow' his burial took place somewhere in that area.
James Williams is my great grandfather and I am wondering if anyone can give me information on how to check for burials taken place in Chepstow or surrounding area at that time.

Not sure if we have corresponded before..
Joseph Williams married Sarah Worgan in Dec 1812 in Bristol[St James PC]
They had children: Maria,Selina,Sarah and James and lived St Briavels Common/Hudnalls. In 1841 1851.. Sarah Williams was widowed,as head of household.. with her son James Williams who was a sailor/mariner/waterman. daughter Maria had married William Hathaway [both died in 1840s],daughter Selina had married William Good, daughter Sarah had died whilst young. James went on to marry Jane Parry, daughter of John Parry, mariner/waterman but died in late 1850s. This family moved to Bristol.
Joseph Williams, who died in 1829, appears to have been the son of Francis Williams of Hewelsfield and his second wife Mary Bowen of Tintern.

Yes, we have corresponded before, but I can, at last, update information regarding James Williams burial place. After paying £30.00p, for information to be released, to Arnos Vale Cemetery/Bristol, they confirmed that James Williams was buried, in a grave, with 2 other crew members of the vessel they were in when it sank and drowned all members of the crew. I think it proves that all you read in the newspapers in the past as well as the present isn't always correct.
