Hi Rita

BMDs in Australia are handled at State level so, unfortunately, the way you search and purchase is differernt for each State. Victorian historical certificates can, indeed, be purchased on-line for $AU17.50 and are an image of the original is downloaded direct to your computer. Australian certificates usually have much more detail than the UK ones I have purchased - so long as the informant gives the correct information. Yes, you do need the register number for Vic certs.

May I recommend Rootschat forum to you. The Australia Board of Rootschat has some wonderful friendly researchers who have a wealth of knowledge and access to CDs etc which they are only too willing to share - gets a bit competitive to be first to give information sometimes! Someone will be able to give you the registration number of your lady, saving you the 99c page search fee. I would be very surprised if there is not lots of information they find about your g-grandmother.

Like this forum, anyone can read; register to post and it's free.

As to the agencies offering to obtain certificates, NSW does have three approved transcription agents whose details are listed on the NSW BMD site - in NSW using a transcription agent is cheaper and quicker than buying from the Government office.
