Wood: St Briavels 1861 census please
by Pat King , New Zealand, Wednesday, July 12, 2006, 02:46 (6710 days ago) @ bertha
Dear Bertha
Thank you so much, that is so good of you to do all that work for me, I am really grateful.
I did have the 1851 census and William Powell should have been William Peveral. I did check the original and it looked like Povrel, which I suppose could have been transcribed as Powell, but no matter.
I was really pleased to see that Mary Ann was still alive too.
Now I will get down to work and really look at what you have sent me, that will take me some time, but there are a few more clues there.
Thank you so very much again,
Pat

I don't know if you already know this website but if you click the link, then scroll down to 'Shepherd Family Ancestors', then scroll to 'Surname List' then down to 'Wood' you'll see Mary Ann, the children and her husband listed here. I think whoever runs the site has researched on the assumption that 'Peveral' is 'Powell', the same as you mentioned that William Powell should be William Peveral, in the 1851 Census

Hope this may be of some help

Dear Bertha
I visited the site and left a message in the Guest area for their interest regarding William Peverall as I have got his burial date at St Mary Magdelene and also his wife's first name Sarah. ( I do not know her family name) So, I imagine that this information would be very useful. How lovely of you to spot that! I only went down to his children.
I am hoping that you have still got the censuses saved and if you have would you please check Mary Ann's marital status on the 1861 census. On the 1851 census I have her as a widow. If you have to look again, do not worry, I have enough information to last me quite some time, thanks to you.
Best wishes,
Pat

Dear Bertha
Thanks for that, I suspected she was. Also, thank you for William Wood, that is so good to have another grandson of William Peveral as for quite sometime we thought that ours were the only descendants!
I still have not caught up with the work you sent me, but it is very interesting to have it and to know that our Peverals now probably make for an enormous family tree! I am entering them all, but I am slow on the key board.
Thank you Bertha,
Kind regards,
Pat

Dear Bertha
Yes please if you do not mind. I have entered some of the information re Harriet, but only have the earlier census, also John please. That will be really good.
I noticed that Harriet m Charles Vaughan, are they possibly one of your family of Vaughan's ? That would be so nice if you are a descendant of Mary Ann Peveral too, I could then send you all the family here, but somehow I think you are not or else you would have said something earlier.
There is no hurry!! just post it whenever you have the time.
Thank you again Bertha, you have been so kind and my Peveral/Wood file is looking healthier than it was as a result.
Kind regards,
Pat

aargh that's a pity I would so like to give you something of ours!
Bertha, thank you so much for all this additional information, I am just about ready to enter it. I had fun working out some of the children, but it now looks good. William would be so proud of your hard work. It would be hard for most of us here to get our tongues around the Welsh place names. Thank you also for looking for marriage records.
Thank you again for alll your kindness, have a rest now!

Finding new ways to spell Vaughan every day!
James Wood was carpenter and step father to William
by Rachel Hill, Monday, July 17, 2006, 12:29 (6705 days ago) @ Pat King
Dear Pat King,
I am a great -great grandaughter relation to Sarah Ann Lewis through her son William Taylor Lewis.
James Wood was carpenter and step father to William, taught him carpentry. I have a relation that has James's work bench and t-square in his workshed. William was a farmer, gravedigger for the church and carpenter (build caskets, even his own!) Sarah was strict with the children, James was a nice friendly chap who smoked and chewed tobacco.
I also have records of Sarah and James' deaths.
Sarah Dec. 14, 1944 age 89
James Nov. 10, 44 age 90 Died at 1 High Fleet, Westbury on Severn
Buried Nov. 14 1944
They are buried in the St. Briavels' Parish. Large flat tombstone, Bottom right corner if you are facing the church from the road (right of the church)
While speaking to this relation that has James's workbench here are some notes.
Jim Wood was in Viney Hill
I was told two of the Wood boys moved to Australia, one became a baker
Wood family lived at Beaconsfield, St. Briavels Common, later in Brandon House (Brockweir? when?)
as William Lewis and wife Henrietta lived on the farm with 5 daughters.
I have not much information on the Wood family, but would be interested in finding out more on this connection.
Please let me know.

Where do the Maddox family live in St. Briavels?
I am interested in the where abouts James Wood was in the 1881 Census.
Making a timeline as to how/ when he met up with Sarah A. Lewis.

Thank-you Bertha,
That's very interesting that Sarah and James were not too far apart in the Common.
Are there any maps that indicate where 32 and 69 St. Briavels Common are?
Or are the numbers simple the "Household" census record number taken that day in the area?
Still trying to find out if Sarah got together with William Taylor (lived in St. Briavel's village) around Feb-March of 1878 and had William Taylor Lewis in November, 1878. The father was not listed on either the birth certifiate or parish record. William Taylor married a woman named Lizzie (ELizabeth Watkins) in Oct-Dec 1879.
As posted earlier in this entry, Sarah later married James.
The timeline works, but I want to be certain the best I can before recording it in my records as this being the case of events.

Dear Bertha
I have replied to Rachel and I am getting some information for her together, largely from the good work you did for me. I am nearly there now, but it has taken me a while, but it all looks good.
By a strange coincidence I have a Baptismal Record where one of the sponsors was John Vaughan in Manchester, I have no details except to whom he married. I know a lot of strays went to Manchester for work in the cottton and weaving industry, from Ireland and from all counties of England. I do not suppose you are looking for someone called John? Let me know and I will post the few details I have. As far as I know there is no connection to my family, but it is just after entering all the Wood/Vaughan's I am conscious of your own family.
Kind regards,
Pat
