by brifield72 , Wednesday, December 07, 2011, 16:17 (4731 days ago)
Could anyone help?. I am trying to find the father of George Matthews, who I belive to be the father of Moses Matthews my great grandfather.
I have searched and found a John Matthews born I belive about1760,but that comes from finding a marriage certifcate for John Matthews and Ann Evans, April,22nd 1782.
I was then hoping John Matthews and Mary Matthews 1736 were the parents of John.
God I am finding it difficult being an amerture does not help.
If you can help I would be most grateful.

Hello Jimashton,
I was delighted with the quick reply i got from you,It helps me very much because
it confirms my own research.
Going on what you have written i think somewhere along the line we must be related.
I will copy what you have given me so that i can look more carefully.
I will give you a laugh, the amount of names aand copying i have done, most of it a waste, i think i have used a small fortune in ink & paper.
Once again thank you.

The only relative in this family - at the moment - is Eliza Roberts 1853, wife of Richard Matthews 1852. Any children would be, but I haven't found any.
The others are "connected" I have found that adding parents and siblings of spouses pays dividends as with the degree of inter-marrying beween Forest of Dean familes those "connected" people often become "related" following subsequent discoveries.

Thank you M P Griffiths.
I had some of the census data but not all including the 1891 for Richard Matthews, from which I can now add some children. I admit to not pursuing that family, but when you have a Family Tree of over 23000 people you cannot keep track of them all.
For the sake of anyone else following this family I should perhaps explain the George Roberts & Patience Turner entry you have shown for the 1891 Census with Timothy Roberts shown as father:
The parents of Eliza Roberts 1853 who married Richard Matthews 1852 were Timothy Roberts 1825 and Mary Jane Nicholls 1828. They had 7 children (but no George) including Patience Turner Roberts ** baptised 6 Apr 1856 Drybrook. She married George Roberts 1856, son of Abel Roberts 1819 & Anne Trigg 1807.
Whilst I have 364 Roberts and 327 Trigg's in my Family Tree neither Abel Roberts 1819 or Anne Trigg 1807 are related to me - yet. If you follow the line back through siblings it inevitably leads to members of the Marfell family where my main interest lies.
** To explain Patience Turner Roberts name her maternal grandparents were Thomas Nicholls 1802/1853 and Patience Turner 1796/1828.

In my tree Eliza Roberts is my great great aunt and her mother, my great great grandmother is Jane Nicholls, bap 28 Dec 1828 Forest Church. Also George Roberts married to Patience Turner Roberts (my gg aunt) is my gg uncle, as son of my great great grandparents Abel Roberts (1819) and Anne Trigg (1818)(baptised 26 Jul 1818 Forest Church) - Ann Trigg 1807 died 1808 buried Abenhall.

Thank you JAJ
Your posting has corrected a few details in my Family Tree.
Following this line within my tree I believe we have emailed in the past and that you are my 7th cousin once removed.
This line is also a classic case of the benefits incured by following siblings and parents of spouses. Anne Trigg 1818's parents William Trigg & Hannah Williams who are not directly related to me provide links to several people that are related to me.

Hi, My ancestors are the Matthews family (my mother's maiden name) the family lived in Hartpury, Glos, in the 1600s,170s, 1800s,. My G, G, G, Grandfather John Matthews moved to the West Midlands in the mid 1850s. John had a brother named George, bapt'd Hartpury parish church 25 April 1830. Do you think we may have a connection somewhere?

Hi John,
It is quite possible we are on the same line, my ggg was George Matthews born
1814.and i believe he was baptisted in Abenall.
If you look at the link for march 17th 2011 from Slowhands to me on Matthews you will see a list of names which you might find helpful.
Best of luck, Brian.

You have said in your latest posting that your GGG Grandfather George was born 1814. It would appear therefore that you have chosen the baptism of 20 Feb 1814 Abenhall with parents John Matthews & Jemima Pimble.
The information provided by M P Griffiths, specifically the 1851 census data would lead me to think that George was baptised 7 Jun 1812 Ruardean son of Moses Matthews & Catherine Marsh, indeed in my Family Tree I have (in the words of Spock) made it so.
In John Shipley's posting the parents of his GGG Grandfather John 1832 and his brother George 1830, both baptised Hartpury appear to be Joseph Matthews & Sarah Lewis married 7 Nov 1827 - with 4 more baptisms for siblings. It is possible that the parents of this Joseph could be Joseph Mathews & Hannah, as there is a Joseph Matthews baptised 27 Jun 1805 with parents Joseph & Hannah.
