Gladys E Lewis B 1914 Mothers Maiden Name Hart (General)

by Tigermel @, Wednesday, December 21, 2011, 05:15 (4717 days ago)

Hi all

Here I am again on the trail of more elusive ancestors!

I wonder if anyone can help regarding the above. I believe Gladys my have been the daughter of George Charles Lewis and Rosa Hart, and an older sister of my Grandmother. George and Rosa married in Cheltenham in 1909 and had 2 children in Cinderford in 1909 and 1911, at some point between then and the end of the war they moved to Castleford in Yorkshire and their next known child was born there in 1918.

I know George went to war in 1914 and signed up in Cheltenham, and he was invalided out around Christmas of 1917 (information kindly supplied by posters on this site).

My Gran was the youngest of their children and was born in 1929 and has no idea who Gladys could be, if she is connected at all, however I just have a feeling that she may be one of ours! To me the gap of 1911 to 1918 between children just seems too long, even taking the war into consideration.

I can find no other mention of Gladys, no marriage or death, and I have ordered a copy of her birth certificate to satisfy my curiosity but I just hope someone can shed some light on her while I wait for that to arrive!

Once again, many thanks and Merry Christmas

Mel

Gladys E LEWIS 1914 Cheltenham

Hi slow hands and thanks for your info, most of it matches with mine apart from the family from the 1911 census, the info I have for my family is as follows

George and Rosa married 1909

Edith Rose Lillian (known as Rose) was born in 1909 - only a few weeks after her parents were married! Family legend has it that George's mother, Martha, stood outside the register office hurling abuse at Rosa after the wedding!

George James Lewis was born in 1911 - he went on to be a professional Rugby League player with Castleford, playing and winning at Wembley in 1935, and kicking off a family obsession with the game and the team! He played for over 20 years, his position of full back eventually being taken over by his younger brother Ron.

Anyhow, I digress! Both children were baptised at Cinderford St John, but I can't find them on the 1911 census, although I know they were still in or around the forest at this point, I just can't fathom why, if Edith does belong to them, she would have been left behind when they moved north, as I do know that quite a few of both the Lewis and Hart families moved at the same time.

Of course there is the possibility that the names and location are just coincidence, or, something that has occurred to me today, is that there may be another Lewis/Hart marriage that I'm not yet aware of.

On that note I'm going to try and check that out, but all help is gratefully received

My apologies, the 1911 census info is correct! Just finished nights so my brain isn't quite functioning properly!
