My x cousin, has just come across a journal written by my Great Grandfather William WICKENDEN who lived at Nibley Mill, Blakeney, and was amongst other things, a Haulier, using his shire horses (photos on Blakeney section) and seems to have had a contact with many local farmer, hauling their grain etc - also a slaughter man etc. and occasionally attended inquests.
This journal written between 1892 and 1906 - lists many local names, and the jobs he did for them. This is going to be posted to me in the new year - and I intend to type this out, and make a list of local names mentioned. So far, I've only got one page that was scanned and sent to me - which talks about going to Bullo , hauling Granite - he did help build many local roads in Blakeney, i.e. Finished Stone on Station Road from Adams for Cty. Council 54 and a half yards at 2s per yard (15 December 1897) and paying G GOLDING for Barley (24 Dec 1897). Met Mr J F SMITH, at Awre went rabbitting with Mr O JENNER, killed 28. (9 December 1897)
The one scanned sheet of the journal I have, is larger than an A4 - so the right hand side, is incomplete, but I can see
MORSE name mentioned on 7 January 1898 -
Other names: H LANE, (H TURLEY - who could be Henry TURLEY another Mason) (Mr LIFLEY or LIVLEY- took his goods to Blakeney Station) - William LIVLEY and wife Ann are on FOD records, he was a mason.
Hopefully, this journal give a glimpse into the lives of other FOD researchers ancestors (when I receive it)

Yep. Looks like I have to claim the clumsy beggar then! (My thanks to you both).
George Edward Morse was the son of William Morse & Jemime Lowe of Viney Hill.
He was married to Martha Powell.
I also came across other references to a George Morse in the Citizen and I think it may be the same one.
Gloucester Citizen Gloucestershire, England 10 Oct 1903

BLAKENEY Mr. George Morse, rendered the anthem Blessed is the man, Messrs. W. Hulin and P. Bennett sharing the duties of organist. The collections, which were good, were for the chapel funds.
Does anyone out there know if it is the same one please?
PS Your project sounds very interesting Marilyn and I would be delighted if you found anything that puts meat on my family bones!

Hi Chris,
were your aforementioned Gloster Citizen articles from the new British Newspapers Archive ? If so it definitely looks a very useful website.
Thanks.

Yes they did come from the British Newspaper Archives, but via Gene's Reunited. You only get to view a bit of the article unless you pay to view it all. Some of the printing is complete gobbledegook but there are some interesting snippets to be found.

Hi Chris and thanks, clearly it looks a worthwhile source for interesting research hints!
Must admit I'd presumed you'd maybe been given a subscription to the Newpaper site for Christmas. Please keep up the good work and thanks for helping us all out.
Martha MORSE nee POWELL of Purlieu Farm

Martha Powell who married George Morse of Purlieu Farm was my cousin. Her father, James Powell was my 3rd great-uncle. I would be interested in any stories you have on Martha Powell Morse or any of her family.
