However, I have not found any records for William and Jane.

This could be their marriage:-

All help gratefully received, thank you.

Hi and welcome to this great forum & website.

This is this site's "version" of your Baptism Record;

Record_ID: 414610
Entry_Number:
Year: 1803
Month: Jan
Day: 9
Parents_Surname: MORGAN
Child_Forenames: John
Fathers_Forenames: William
Mothers_Forenames: Jane
Mothers_Surname:
Residence:
Occupation:
Officiating_Minister:
Event: Baptism
Memoranda: Son of
Notes: Father's name Willm entered in the PR expanded to William. Not in correct date order.
Register_Reference: P220 IN 1/2
Page_Number: 25
Parish_Chapel: Mitcheldean
Soundex: M625

So sadly no extra notes (as occasionally occurs) re actual birthdate.

However I see there are an astoundingly high number of John MORGAN PRs on the site's database with 450 Baptisms alone, 4 in 1803 and many more in close proximity !!. Before we look for his parents, please confirm you are sure this one is "your"s ?.

As to finding his exact birthdate I'm a mere beginner at all this so I stand to be corrected, but personally I can only assume he was born in the week or two before his baptism. I don't know where we can go to find his birthdate except maybe family records or Bible ?.

Searching the parish records on this site produced the only John Morgan born within the right time frame and district. The 1861 census states that he was born in Mitcheldean. This would seem to back up his record of baptism. Am I on the right track?

Sorry, I meant to add before posting that I tend to agree that we may never find John Morgan's exact birth date in 1803. I am satisfied with the baptism record but would like to find records for William and Jane.

John MORGAN - 1841/1851 census

Thank you - I have the 1841 & 1851 census details but had not thought to search for Jane/William's children. John 1803 is there so these must be the correct parents.

Have to admit that I am still struggling with the advanced search but have had some success with it today. So frustrating at times but obviously you know what to ask for.

Last night, I found the marriage of William Morgan to Jane Ponton in 1782 but needed further confirmation. It would seem that I now have his birth date.

Once again, thank you.

Hi again calzeat,
thanks for your full reply, I'm pleased you are confident this is your line and that you have clearly done your homework (sometimes new posters don't seem aware of this site's PR database etc etc so can ask somewhat vague/optimistic questions). Thanks for understanding my "reluctance" to spend too much time last night on it without further clarification. Yes I think you're on the right line, as the location Mitcheldean seems critical here as that really narrows your search. Luckily for you MPG is on the case and she has more skill & sources than I do so you can be sure she'll be on the right lines. I've just checked my 1851 Glos Census CD and as expected I agree with her findings below in that respect.
I was interested to see Ancestry's rather poor transcriptions !. I've only just started using Ancestry via my local library's free terminal and I must say I've been very unimpressed with their apparently high % of mis-transcriptions from easily read census forms, I wonder if they use a computer system rather than people who think !
ATB Jeff.

Finally, please note (if you haven't already) this website contains far more than the PRs. The forum is itself searchable, as is the website which includes a huge amount of old documents, photos, e-books, newpaper clippings etc etc. We are lucky to have such an excellent site especially as it's subscription-free.

ps Just to advise you can edit your own posts rather than add extra ones. I say this as this forum automatically and sometimes frustratingly "locks" a thread after 20 posts, regardless of the size of each post. See "FAQ" section for further info.

Thank you for all your help and advice. I have just found the edit facility.

I have been a member for a few months and agree that it is a splendid site - I always search here rather on Ancestry for exactly the reasons you mention. However, it will be awhile before my skills match those of MPG, if ever.
