"Fred" MATTHEWS family tree Blaisdon area (General)

it's very difficult for anyone else to help you.

We need to establish a timeframe; I suspect the Fred we are looking for was born in the 1920's( poss 1930's) , however so far all "Fred" M's seem to be Gloucester candidates rather than Forest, but here is my best shot

WHEN Fred Matthews offered a woman a lift during the war he got much more than he bargained for.

Fred, of Innsworth Lane in Longlevens, and his wife Margaret, have now been married for 65 years and will celebrate their wedding anniversary today.

Fred said: "I have lived in Gloucester all my life, whereas Margaret came from Abbots Bromley and was here during the war, which is where we met.

"I was deferred from the war and worked in Ministry of War Transport in Gloucester and Margaret worked as a cook in the Women's Air Force (WAF).

"I was driving and Margaret and a friend were going to the Hare and Hounds pub. At that time the WAFs and other service people would often walk down there and I would give them a lift.

"So I stopped to pick them up and it all went from there."

The couple, who are both 86, got married in Margaret's hometown on June 24 in 1944 at St Nicholas Church Abbots Bromley in Staffordshire.

Fred said: "After the war, I worked for the British Road Services as a long distance and national lorry driver.

"Margaret was a housewife, looking after the children then, after she went back to work, as a cook for the Spread Eagle Hotel in Gloucester and then she went to work for a catering company in Hucclecote before working in the Land Registry."

The couple have four children, Ann, Malcolm, Terry and Heather, and five grandchildren, who will be joining them for their anniversary.

"I am not sure what we are doing yet, we will probably just see the family," he said.

"Our secret to being married so long is that we just look after each other and that is it."

Margaret said:" I don't think it was love at first sight but we just got on really well. We have been together ever since and, although we may have had our ups and downs, we have always got through it together."
