Cinderford St John graveyard - Harris family (General)

by unknown, Monday, January 09, 2012, 00:28 (4706 days ago)

Hi,

Several of my ancestors are buried in Cinderford St Johns during the 1800's.

Unfortunately the burial records do not state the plot.

I see from an old message on the forum from 2009 that there was talk of the graveyard being transcribed by the Gloucestershire Family History Society. Did this ever happen?

My father is taking a trip to the Forest Of Dean next week so I was hoping he could visit the graveyard to find the various graves but it would be a lot easier if he knew roughly where to look.

The two main graves I am looking for are Esau Harris (died 1873) and Esau Harris (died 1882).

Thanks.

I wish you luck, The grave was very overgrown when we visited in 1996 The church warden does have a book of records of the grave sights. So your father would be advised to seek help from the warden as we were first sent to Gloucester Records Office and they had no records.
Interestingly We are linked to the Harris family I wonder if their is any conection to your person. Please write of line tarbart AT tadaust.org.au

You may well have done so, but if not its worth contacting GlosFHS ?
http://www.gfhs.org.uk/Contactus.htm

They do have a Glos Monuments cd £10 which lists St John's as included.
http://www.gfhs.org.uk/glosmicd.htm

Depending where you're visiting from perhaps there Gloster Office is worht visiting first ?
According to the website open most days;

GLOUCESTERSHIRE FAMILY HISTORY CENTRE
Clarence Row, Alvin Street, Gloucester, GL1 3AH.
Telephone: 01452 524344
Email: help@gfhs.org.uk

The Centre is located in Gloucester City Centre within the grounds of Gloucestershire Archives.

Opening Times
Mondays to Fridays (except bank holidays) 10 am – 4 pm
1st and 3rd Saturday of each month 9.45 am – 12.45 pm

Good luck.

(Its a shame as last weekend I was a few yards from St John's visiting family)

Re GLOS Family History CD

Have just been in contact with them.

The CD covers ONLY Baptist Chapel burial ground, Church Rd, Cinderford.

The entry St Johns rd appears to be copied from the next entry (Cirencester).

GFS Website will be amended.

regards
Forest

My mother attends Cinderford St Stephens / Bilson Mission Church and she tells me they have a relatively new and very go-ahead helpfull Vicar. I believe he also "serves" St John's ?. If so it may well be worth giving him a call ?.
See attached, good luck.
