Sutton Farm or Wellingtons Farm (General)

by SANDRADAY, Thursday, July 20, 2006, 02:28 (6702 days ago)

Does anyone have any information on Sutton Farm, Flaxley.
It looks as though it may be now the riding stables at Littledean, but is there any way of finding out who lived there to confirm if Elizabeth and John Wellington actually did own it. Also I notice on the old maps there is a place called Wellingtons Grove near by...is that just coincidnce or named after my Wellington ancestors.

Wellington's Farm / Sutton Bottom nr Littledean

by SANDRADAY, Wednesday, July 26, 2006, 00:04 (6696 days ago) @ slowhands

Thanks Slowhands, I had seen this map previously. What was quite interesting about it, was near to the Farm was an area called Wellingtons Grove. Is there anywhere I can find out what this area is and also is there a way I can find out who owned the farm in the past. I was in contact with a lady in Canada and she thought the farm was something to do with Sutton Seeds company, although I cannot find anything about that myself.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Suton's Seeds was founded by a London man - John Sutton in Reading Berkshire. I'm not aware of a Gloucestershire connection.

The area near Littledean is named Sutton and has been for a while :-), I'm sure that Sutton Farm is just the name of a farm in Sutton (!) BTW Sutton is believe to be Saxon / Old English in origin , meaning South Farm or South Village - ties in with position relative to Dean Hall / Roman settlement and road etc...

Wellington's grove sounds like it was named in parallel with Wellington's Farm. And the Wellington family is probably responsible for the name of the Farm ..

I have no knowledge of the farm but I have ancestors on the maternal side who were John Wellington and Elizabeth(maiden name Pritchard).
They were married about 1810 in Littledaen.
Their Grandson Thomas Wellington was my great grandfather.
Do you think we are talking about the same family?

Sutton Farm or Wellingtons Farm

by Martin Jones, France, Tuesday, August 08, 2006, 02:01 (6683 days ago) @ SANDRADAY

I've only just seen this question (being a bit of an occasional researcher).

My mother, Marjorie Newman, was born in Sutton Farm in 1909. It was farmed (but, I think, not owned) by the Newmans from about the 1850's to about 1915.

Sutton Farm is now called Baynham Farm on the Ordinance Survey. The current owners in fact call it Sutton Baynham Farm.

It's a couple of hundred yards up a track from Wellington Farm, which I think is now the riding school.

Just to confuse thing further, the 1841 census shows the occupant of Sutton Farm as being Elizabeth Wellington and family, so it would seem that the two properties were linked, and maybe formed one farm at the time.
