Hi and welcome,

So Charles born abt June 1862.

Using the Advanced Search (apologies if you've seen it, link on PR search page) you can search in many ways with minimal information.
Eg searching the Baptisms for all those having parents Joseph & Emma, enter their forenames and surname just "W" (to allow for spelling variations such as Whaite, Wait, Wyatt, etc..), will also give Charles' siblings:

Record ID 38816
Entry Number 50

Due to the high likelihood of spelling variations for this surname, when searching this site's PRs tick the "Soundex" box, to hopefully find all variations of spelling. By this you can see, for example, a long Wait/Waite/Wayte/White line in Awre,Alvington,Blakeney,Newnham etc (all near Lydney) going back to to the C17th.

Alternatively, use the "%" wildcard character, eg enter "Wa%" as the surname gives results for all surnames starting "Wa".

Unfortunately as yet I cannot find Marriages for Joseph/Emma or Charles, assuming they were in the Forest area, but have found:

Searching the Burial Records for Charles gives this as a possible "best fit" (wrt location & particularly age) that I can see, although perhaps odd wrt mispelt name ?:

This date suggests the previous "guess" for Charles is wrong, surely if Charles was buried locally then John would have ensured his name spelt correctly ?

Charles Waite b1860s, Lydney area.

Searching again for Charles now using GlosBMD site which only carries five PRs for Charles Wait/Waite within Dean, including this interesting Baptism ?:
http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/bmd/SimpleSearch.aspx

Child Surname Child Forename Father Surname Mother Surname Mother's Former Name Year District Office Register Entry
WAIT Charles WAIT WAIT FISHER 1862 Forest of Dean Chepstow, Lydney 9 487

Maybe wrong but worth searching if mother Emma was a Fisher...(SEE BELOW)

Same site gives these possible Marriages, although no ages given so...??

Groom Surname Groom Forename Bride Surname Bride Forename District Parish Building Year Register Entry
WAIT Charles MARTIN Emily Forest of Dean Alvington St Andrew 1884 1 82

and then:

Groom Surname Groom Forename Bride Surname Bride Forename District Parish Building Year Register Entry
WAITE Charles VIRGO Eliza Forest of Dean Westbury-on-Severn (FoD) Register Office 1898 11 138

So correct locations in both cases ?

Searching for first possible wife Emily Martin in this site's Baptisms gives several in the Lydney area, the only Alvington (as per Marriage) one being a fair possibilty:

Record_ID: 2198

I cannot find a likely burial pre 1898.
But this which I declined earlier is her Marriage from this FoD site, on second looks it could well be our Charles !?:

("fireman" here probably is a steam engine stoker, tinworks boilerhouse perhaps ?. Or a railway loco fireman; platelayer is a railway trade (or possibly timplate ?).

IF Charles did remarry, there are several possible Baptisms on this site's database for Eliza Virgo in this Severnside area.

If correct explains use of Joel and not Joseph on earlier Charles Mariage Record, all else fits very well. Re witnesses Caroline Fisher could be Emma's mother or sister ?. Henry Waite ? in my searches I've seen Baptisms for Charles Henry Waite which could be relevant, see below...

Joseph / Joel Waite b1830s, Lydney area.

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Wednesday, January 25, 2012, 03:36 (4682 days ago) @ Jefff

Searching for Joel/Joseph:

This seems entirely reasonable in several ways, not least their mothers' names Sarah & Maria being used for their firstborn child. HOWEVER I'm a little "nervous" regarding change of name between Joseph & Joel, especially as there are a fair few possible Josephs in this area too !....?

Also found Charles' nephew:

As mentioned earlier re witness Henry Waite, I also noticed this later Baptism:

Is this a relation, seems possible to me ?.

Searching the 1851 Glos Census cd gives the following household:

2443 1851 CENSUS HO107/2443 FF.0572-0592 ED.3C LYDNEY 3
Piece: 2443 Folio: 0586 Schedule: 087

WAITE Joel SO U 21 Tin Plate Washman GLS Pilawell [Pillowell] (c1830)
WAITE Henry SO U 19 Forgeman GLS Lydney (c1832)

So by now father Thomas has presumably passedaway leaving mother Maria as Head of household, witness Henry was indeed Joel's brother and presumably witness in the absence of father ?.

Also on the 1851 Census in same general (Blakeney) area are:

1959 1851 CENSUS HO107/1959 FF.0307-0329 ED.3B? 5D? NEWNHAM 1

WAIT Adelaide DA U 12 - GLS East Dean (c1839)
WAIT Sarah DA GLS East Dean (c1837)

And probably not relevant so ?:

Also in same area:
1959 1851 CENSUS HO107/1959 FF.0262-0293 ED.4E NEWNHAM 1
Piece: 1959 Folio: 0271 Schedule: 032

Not sure how much they help?

I hope this is all of interest ?. Sadly I don't have access to the subsequent Census' which will hopefully backup these suggestions wrt marriages etc etc.
Over to the other forum members who I'm sure will help, please ....

Good luck, Jeff.

I took interest in this Thread because Wait(e) is one of my wider family surnames.

Most of this is unfamiliar to me. Except for 1851 Census Piece: 1959 Folio 0311 Sched: 004

Bradley Hill

Samuel and Elizabeth Wait and family are mine, and not known to be connected to the matters contained in this Thread.

Thankyou once again Slowhands for bring order to my chaos !.

Its good to see that Joseph/Joel b1832 were one and the same man;
is Joel a common variation of Joseph, I've tried looking up these names and I can't see any link, but. ?
Also sorry for my redherring suggesting Charles Henry b1862 had remarried in 1898.

Well done Sir !

Wow What a lot of information. I already knew my family line as I have many of the death certificates & have researched the direct line back to the early 18th century. I started because of the family legend that A Wait (as it was then spelt) married a Wintour. Certainly the Waits then named a son in each generation Wintour as is the custom when a Wintour woman married. Sure enough I found the marriage of John Wait to Sarah Wintour ( d. of James Wintour) they had Thomas who had Joel/ Joseph -yes both names were used .J/J had John , my g grandfather. He married priscilla They had Walter Henry, my grandfather who married Katherine Bevan & their children were John Charles, George & Martha priscilla, my mother.
Walter had 3 other brothers Joelwho died in 1922 Wintour & Albert. His father John had risen from being a tinplate labourer to management of Richard Thomas tinplate works, ending up in Abercarn. Wintour also managed Richard Thomas works
Charles was the one "Black Hole" in my research so thank you all for helping to shed light on him
I am quite over-awed by your ability to sort things out
If anyone wants info on the Wintours I have loads& with a few gaps can trace them back to the Norman Conquest

You're very welcome, I'm sure Slowhands et al share my gratitude for you taking the time to post & close the thread as twere, I wish more posters did the same.

I'm also delighted yet still intrigued that Joel & Joseph are interchangable names; do you know why, does this happen elsewhere ?

Re the Wintours I presume this is associated with Wyntour's Leap, wow !

I've just seen your prior thread in which you mention problems navigating the Glos Archive website.
http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=27794

You're not alone in this, until only a month or so ago I couldn't drive it at all, never got past the homepage. Thankfully it seems to have been serviced and if you try it now hopefully you'll get a lot more success, certainly I've found some interesting results with it.
http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/DServe/DServe.exe?dsqApp=Archive&dsqDb=catalog&am...

If not the National Archives website will also "find" some of the same results, although as with so many such site's I suggest you don't try to input too much info into the search engine at a time or it just falls over !.

Finally thanks for your offer to share your Wintour researches. Perhaps you could please do so via this site's Surname Register from the Home Page ?

Thanks and good luck with your continued research.

Joel & Joseph are interchangable names;

I think it is only a (poor) transcription that has resulted in Joseph rather than Joel; although it may be that when the record was originally recorded "Joseph" was entered. Joel & Joseph are distinct christian names.

1861
Joseh Wait abt 1831

is a reasonable transcription Josel or Joael would have been acceptable too, in fact the late Joael is probably as close phonetically as you will get (?)

Fair enough, your experience of transcriptions shows again !.
My first thought was maybe the minister thought he heard Joe so wrote Joseph when it was actually Joel, but that made no sense as the same minister "got it right" at various other times.

I must admit in my few forays into Ancestry (I'm sure other sites are similar) I've been amazed at how poor such an apparently high % of transcriptions can be from perfectly legible census forms. I was confused to find many of my Longhope ancestors are apparently "from" Shropshire, I now know there's a Westbury Parish in that county too!

Cheers Slowhands ;-)

Thanksagain. I have so much info on the wynter/ Winter/ Wintour family of LydneyThat I don't know how to transmit it. Will think about your suggestion. I've done the stories of John Wynter. Sir Edward Wintour & the sons of Sir John, also a family tree back to the Conquest with only 2 gaps or doubts- Coward & idler that I am I sit here with the copious notes on Admiral William & sir John , promising I will make a start ( or mortgage many an hour)on them soon. So far I have at least a dozen folders about them, their sons& their adventures. They range from heroes of the Armada battle To explorers, from confidants of Royalty to two who were hanged for murder in the American colonies. Fascinating stuff!
Thanks again for all your help . You & slowhands are amazing.

Mildred Violet Robins who married Joel Wait & laterAlbert Bishop was known in the family as Aunt Vi . She did not have children & offered to take Walter & Katherine Waite's son George when Walter was posted to India & her husband Joe was serving in the Royal Navy in the 1st World War. She had at least one step daughter from her 2nd marrige as my mother's cousin met her in Abercarn.John Waite ran the Commercial after leaving Abercarn tinplate works &, with a small group of business men built Gwyddon Road.

Hi,

Would you have a photo I may borrow please to show my Dad.My Dad her nephew never knew her as she died when he was 2 or 3 years old.
I have a lot of info on the rest of the family and pictures, but sadly not much on her.
The Wingfield part of her name is her Grandmothers Maiden name and I live in the house she was born in.
My Grandmother died in 1966,her onlr brother died in 1956, I can just remeber her other two sisters but I was only small.
Happy to exchange info with you.
