Sydney LEADBEATER 1894 - 1941 Cinderford -> Pontadawe (General)

Hi Brian & Lead,

A few years ago I had a go at mapping out the leadbeater clan in an attempt to pick a way thro it and also to look for clues on where they originally came from. With so much movement in the 19th C between the northern coalfields and the Forest, it was complicated. However I would offer up the following two bits of info:

1) As you already know, James Leighbeter c.1760 is the only name in the district (in the right place at the right time), so we can do no more for now than assume he is the father of James 1790 - 1837, John 1793 etc. James Leighbeter 1760 married Sarah Steele at English Bicknor on 22 May 1793, ( not Sarah Hicks as I think I found this to be a transcription error). The Steeles were an established Littledean family.

2)Thomas Leadbeater c1824, son of John and Margaret, married a Sarah ... and is the father of James 1864 and Thomas 1861. The suggested marriage of a Thomas Leadbeter and Sarah Smith in 1873 does not tie up with this, unless there is a transcription error. This is on the fringe of my own research and I have not progressed it.

regards ... Danny
