Hale family of Lane End, West Dean (General)
by Ray Francombe , Thursday, August 03, 2006, 06:36 (6688 days ago)
Hi everyone - I'm sure someone out there can help !
I have researched down to a Moses Hale (born about 1799) and baptised I believe at Newland, possibly on May 29 that year. He married Ann.
Also, hopefully his father, again named Moses, born about 1771 and believed married (to Anne) on Feb. 9 1790 also at Newland. He lived at Lane End, West Dean.
If anyone can help or guide me towards obtaining records for Newland for these years I would be more than grateful.

You might like to have a look at Edwin Hale's webpage. It looks like your Moses is there.

Margaret,
Many thanks for your reply and for the link. Unfortunately the Moses' I am looking for are not there. Most of the Hale's on this site seem to originate from the Littledean area.
Regards, Ray

My suspicion falls here :-
Why - Hawkins is "common" in Berry Hill / Eng Bicknor and this may be a "local" church ( just down the hill) willing to marry a pregnant bride ?

thanks, yes that does seem strange, especially because if the child was baptised 30/7/1820 then it was most probaly born before that date.i am sure this is right because the 1841 census gives moses,ann,edward21,john15 and moses12 living at pool way lane this i am sure is my family but i am stuck after moses b 1799 i know his father was moses(again)and ann hamton but cant work beyond that as there is more than 1 birth for this one born around1772.any ideas ???

Hello Ray
I have just joined this forum and I am also researching HALE of Lane End, West Dean. My interest is through Henry HALE (b.c1835) and his parents Thomas (b.c1794)and Ann. Thomas was the son of Aaron HALE (b.c1766) and Elizabeth EVANS.
In the 1841 Census Aaron HALE, is living next door to Thomas & Ann and also livied in close proximity to Moses HALE (70)and Ann (25). Also Moses (40) & Ann (40) HALE and their children Edward (20), John (15), Moses (12) and Mary (9) who I understand was his son.
Next door to Moses HALE snr was George (50) & Sarah (45) HALE and their children Sarah (15), Charlot (14), George (12), Pheby (10) and Agnes (4).
I suspect these families are inter-related in some way.
Dee

Hello Dee,
Nice to see we are researching similar threads for the Hale family.
Yes, there are several possibilities on that 1841 census. My interest is with old Moses Hale (70) who was my GGGG/grandfather. At this point he is probably living with his daughter (Ann 25). His wife Anne (Hamton) has obviously died.
George (50) who lives next door is his son - born 1791 and christened at Newland on July 24. He married Sarah Ferber in 1811. Other children are Moses, John and Nancy. My line continues here with Moses. No doubt Thomas (25) (and Diana) who live next door was Thomas's son. One big happy family here waiting to be unravelled !!
My wife and I paid a visit to the Forest of Dean recently visiting many of the places connected with the Hales on the census forms - Parkend, Bromley Lodge in Ellwood where they once lived, Coleford, Newland and several pits where they worked. So we got a real feel for the area. Incidentally Lane End is now known as Broadwell.
Please let me know of any progress you make and I will do the same.
Regards, Ray

Incidentally Lane End is now known as Broadwell.
Yes and no !
The Eastern fringe of Coleford is a ribbon development up against the Forest Inclosures, often referred to as Lane End, and encompasses Broadwell Lane End , Coalway Lane End and Littledean Lane End ( at least)
