Julia Meek (B:abt1849) of East Dean-M-Richard Onions (General)

by unknown, Sunday, June 10, 2012, 01:50 (4552 days ago)

Hello,

I am looking for information on Julia Meek born about 1849 in East Dean. She married Richard Onions (B: abt 1844, coal miner), also from East Dean.
Their children:
Richard James Onions 1870 –
Albert George Onions 1874 –
Charlotte Matilda Onions 1876 –
Owen Thomas Onions 1878 –
Percival William Onions 1881 –
Florence Julia Onions 1883 – 1969 (My great-great grandmother)
Ernest Valentine Onions 1886 –
Gertrude E Onions 1889 –

For the 1881 Census, Richard and Julia were living with their children on Ruardean Hill in Westbury on Severn, East Dean. This census also listed a John (B: abt 1851, coal miner) and Anna (B: abt 1855) Meek with their children. This could be a brother or cousin??

By the 1901 Census, Richard had died and Julia married Edwin Rosser Brown (coal miner) living in Cefn Y Crib.

I am looking for birth records, marriage records, parents or siblings of Richard Onions and Julia Meek.

All the information I have is listed on my Ancestory page: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/11244067/person/1869487954.

Julia Meek (B:abt1849) of East Dean-M-Richard Onions

by cmfenton @, Ferndown, Dorset, Sunday, June 10, 2012, 10:09 (4552 days ago) @ unknown

As Slowhands has indicated Julia was born to Charlotte Gough before her marriage to George Meek though subsequently took his name. (So it is not unreasonable to assume she was George's daughter).
Charlotte died in 1860 and George remarried later that year (Elizabeth Harris 30Dec1860 - Drybrook). They subsequently had 7 children that I know of:
George 1861; Timothy 1863; Thomas 1868; Lucy 1869; Annie 1872; James 1873; Clara Jane 1878.
I do not know of any other children to George and Charlotte.

George (1831) was the son of George Meek (1801-1867) and Sarah Brain (1805-1848) who married 9Jun1824 at Ruardean. They had eight children:
Emmanuel 1824; Esther 1826; Susan 1828; George 1831; Josiah 1834; Ann 1836; Joseph 1838 and Lucy 1842.

I am related to George snr (2nd cousin 5 times removed) via a common ancestor John Meek (c1709) who married Elizabeth Smart. Their son Joseph Meek (1749-1805) married Ann Harris and George (1801) was the youngest of their 9 children.

Needless to say there are a large number of descendants from these many Meek children!

Colin

I will go back over this thread and will no doubt add some new information from Slowhands. But first I was scrolling through to find a reference to the fact that Julia was actually Julia Gough baptised as a base child to Charlotte :

Year: 1849
Month: Jan
Day: 7
Parents_Surname: GOUGH
Child_Forenames: Julia
Fathers_Forenames: [not stated]
Mothers_Forenames: Charlotte
Mothers_Surname:
Residence: Michel Dean
Occupation: [not stated]

Event: Baptism
Memoranda: base child of. In the Year 1849
Notes:
Register_Reference: P 220 IN 1/3
Page_Number: 91
Parish_Chapel: Mitcheldean

Noting that you are 2nd cousin 5 times removed from George Meek senior (1801) and knowing that we are related, I checked my relationship to this George Meek - I am his 2nd cousin 6 times removed.

Our details are the same, but I have one more child for George Meek & Elizabeth Harris - Elizabeth 1870 :

1871 Census East Dean
2597/23
George Meek 40 Coal Miner East Dean
Elizabeth 30 East Dean
George 11 East Dean
Timothy 8 East Dean
Tom 4 East Dean
Lucy 2 East Dean
Elizabeth 1 East Dean

Elizabeth is not with the family in 1881, so must have died.

PS Edit. Having gone back through the thread, I have to apologise to Slowhands, he did note that Julia was baptised Gough at the beginning. As anticipated I have added some new information from Slowhands from this thread, even though Julia is not technically related to me, she is of course connected.

An item of interest I can add is that Matilda Gough, sister of Charlotte Gough married Emanuel Meek 1824, brother of George Meek who married Charlotte. They married 1845 East Dean :

My great grandfather Adam Edwin Meek a cousin to Julia is buried at Cefn Y Crib Pontypool and I suspect Julia the same. Adam had a sister Elizabeth who I have failed to trace, she was born about the same time as Julia. There're not the same person are they.

Matilda BRIGHT nee MEEK nee LEACH 1824 -> 1908

I am confused - Are there too many Matilda's spoiling the pie ?

As at the beginning of this thread, the Matilda that Emanuel Meek married in Ross District Jun qtr 1845 was Matilda Gough. Daughter of William Gough & Esther:

Year: 1823
Month: Nov
Day: 9
Parents_Surname: GOUGH
Child_Forenames: Matilda
Fathers_Forenames: William
Mothers_Forenames: Esther
Mothers_Surname:
Residence: Abinghall

1841Census Mitcheldean
William Gaugh abt 1800 Gloucestershire,
Esther Gaugh abt 1794 Mitchell Dean,
Matilda Gaugh abt 1824 Gloucestershire,
George Gaugh abt 1827 Gloucestershire,
Charlott Gaugh abt 1829 Gloucestershire,
Charles Gaugh abt 1833 Gloucestershire,

1851 Census Mitcheldean
William Gough abt 1791 Mitcheldean, Head
Esther Gough abt 1795 Aston Ingham, Wife
George Gough abt 1827 Abinghall, Son
Charles Gough abt 1833 Abinghall, Son
Lemul Gough abt 1844 Mitchelden, Grandson

I had Emanuel Meek's widow as marrying John Bright in 1884, but this is evidently wrong.

In order to sort my Family Tree out, can anyone through any light on the Elijah Meek who as shown on the parish record was the father of the Matilda who married John Bright.

Thank you Slowhands

So the 1846 marriage between "Matilda" & Edmund Meek, which showed her father as Elijah Meek was a transcription error as this Matilda's father was Elijah Leech.
