Moggridge in Dymock (General)

by dennisc3 @, Tuesday, June 12, 2012, 12:57 (4550 days ago)

There were two Moggridge families in Dymock at the beginning of the 19th Century, one of them rich landowners, the other removed from Bradford on Avon under the Act of Settlement. Needless to say I stem from the latter! I think there must be a connection, otherwise why would people born in Wiltshire be removed to Gloucestershire? If anybody has Moggridges (or Mockridges) in their tree, I would be pleased to compare notes.

Thank you for the time you have taken. John and Mary are my GGG Grandparents. James who married Sarah Reed was the older brother by two years of Sarah who is my GG Grandmother. This is the family which was removed to Dymock from Bradford in 1823. Priscilla was unchristened when they arrived, but born in Bradford. With one exception, I had the details you sent, I also have James' apprenticeship details in 1824 to George Thurston of Pitt House, Dymock learning husbandry.

My problem is that John was born in Holt, Wiltshire and married in Winsley, Bradford on Avon where most of his children were subsequently born. What I cannot understand is why he was removed to Dymock.

There was a "rich" Moggridge family in Dymock based at the Boyce Dymock, a property left to John Moggridge (and through him to his son John Hodder Moggridge) in the will of Ann Cam of schoolhouse fame. I have wondered if our family were removed to Dymock to be in the care of rich relatives, but if this is the case it did not work, since our lot finished up in the workhouse!

I have not managed to prove a connection to the two branches of Moggridges represented by this story. The Moggridges at the Boyce were, however, also from Bradford on Avon, but I have traced them back to Devon, the heart of the Moggridge clan, whilst our John was born in Holt as a Mockridge. It may be that a parish clerk in Dymock just assumed that our man was unable to spell his name properly and so used the version he would already have known.
