Fred MARFELL 1870- (General)

by cjk136 @, Wednesday, June 13, 2012, 08:46 (4549 days ago)

I am looking for more information about Fred MARFELL born Q1 1870. As he appears to be living with his grandparents Levi MARFELL 1820 & Lydia MARFELL 1824, can anyone confirm if any of their offspring eg Albert, Reuben or Bertha are his parents please? Is Wallace 1873 his brother?

Also, as I believe this may be him in 1924 on a 'tourist' trip to New York (possibly to visit relatives?) does anyone know if it is him and if he returned to this country? And where he died? So far all I have is:

The FENWICK family of The Farm Woodside

by cjk136 @, Wednesday, June 13, 2012, 21:20 (4549 days ago) @ slowhands

Please can you tell me if Wallace's residence 'The Farm' is a dwelling or an area of land and is it possible to give an exact location?

I have a postcard from the early 1900s adressed to The Farm, Ruardean Woodside, Nr Mitcheldean Glos-shire. The family that lived there were William Taylor FENWICK 1860-1934 born in County Durham, and his wife Sophia Dora nee MARFELL 1858-1947 who was the daughter of Benjamin MARFELL and Elizabeth nee MASON 1827-1922&23.

They had two children: A son William Taylor FENWICK 1883-1954 who moved to Birkenhead and is listed on the 1911 census as a nephew of Samuel MITCHELL 1871.

Their daughter Annie Thompson FENWICK 1888 was in Kensington London as a ladies maid in 1911. I would be very interested to know if anyone has any further information about what happened to Annie after that. Did she marry? When did she die?

PS
I believe that Samuel MITCHELL, (who William Taylor FENWICK 1883 was staying with in 1911 in Birkenhead) married Kate MARFELL 1876, in Liverpool in 1895, who was also a daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth MARFELL.

Well spotted M P Griffiths and thanks for your help!

I will look into these leads especially the marriage as Annie had many relatives in Bristol at that time.

I mistook the 'I' (in your posting for Annie's possible marriage) as a numeral and confused Barton for Barton Regis, (Bristol) hence my previous reply.

Having found the notice now, I realise the wedding was Barton upon Irwell - which seems a long way - and I'll have to do more to try and validate this. Unless anyone else knows differently...!!

Thanks again.

You are right Kate Marfell born 25 Mar 1876 daughter of Benjamin Marfell & Elizabeth Mason did indeed marry Samuel Mitchell born 1874 Bailieborough Co. Cavan, Ireland, in St Peters Ch. Liverpool in 1895. Kate was the sister of Sophia Dora Marfell one of her 11 siblings.

I have posted a picture of Benjamin Marfell & Elizabeth Mason, looking very upright citizens. They married 11 April 1858 in Christchurch, West Dean, not a short walk from Ruardean considering Elizabeth was 8 months pregnant with Sophia Dora Marfell. The church was obviously chosen because of this fact. Ironically a witness was Benjamin's sister Selina Marfell whose second marriage was to someone 37 years her junior, her first husband William Read was the other witness. Selina Read nee Marfell was only 3 months pregnant with her first child - Dora on 19 Mar 1859 at her first marriage.

Fred MARFELL 1870-

by jimashton @, Wednesday, June 13, 2012, 16:20 (4549 days ago) @ cjk136

Hi Cjk136

I have a Lot of information regarding Fred Marfell, including a copy of his original birth certificate, born 30 Jan 1870 Ruardean, illegitimate son of Bertha Marfell, grandson of Levi Marfell & Lydia nee Marfell. Also a copy of his forged birth certificate showing a father Levi Marfell, used on entry to USA. He died 12 July 1936 St Catherine's Hosp. Indiana Harbour, IL.USA, buried 14 Jul 1936 Springdale Cemetery, Peoria, IL. USA

I have his US naturalisation papers, Mining Engineer certificate and his photograph. I also have details for his 11 children and their dependants from his first wife Mary Magdalen Schilling born 16 Oct 1867 Belleville, IL, USA, died 27 Sep 1943 Peoria IL. USA, and know of his second wife Mary Gray, but know nothing about her. I also have no knowledge of either marriage.

He emigrated twice :

-2 Oct 1920, shown arriving at Ellis Island on the ship "Imperator departed from Southampton, England. He is shown as married and residing in Pieoria IL.
-24 Aug 1924, shown arriving at Ellis Island on the ship "Mauretania" departed from Southampton, England. Shown as married and from Pieoria, IL.

His mother Bertha Marfell married twice - to Aaron James Roberts 1853/1884 on 27 Oct 1873 Forest Church - 5 children, then following his death she married William Webb 1868 on 12 Oct 1885 Cinderford 4 children.

She had 2 illegitimate children Fred 1870 & Wallace Birt 1872/5 Jun 1885, his death certificate shows Alcoholic poisoning & Convulsions.

I haven't had time to study Slowhands information but from a quick glance I have gained new information - Bertha's burial.

Slowhands and Jim,

Thank you both for a very full set of information, it always amazes me how much you know! This has helped me sort out ‘my’ Fred Marfell 1870 born in Eastdean and Frederick Marfell 1872 born in Linton.

Jim, do you think the 1891 census showing Fred as a police constable is the same Fred who emigrated twice? If this is the case I am fascinated by your comment that he forged a birth certificate to gain entry into the States – perhaps he learnt a few tricks of the trade whilst he was at the Police Station! I presume the forgery wasn’t very convincing. Do you know if he became a mining engineer after he emigrated?

As Dewey has observed, I probably - to be more accurate - have stated that Fred travelled to USA twice.

I believe he was the Fred boarding in the Police Station in 1891.

I have 8 Fred/Frederick Marfell's, but only 2 "other" Fred's are in the same time frame. Starting with the least likely to the other Fred you mention are :

(1) Frederick John Marfell born 9 Sep 1871 Walford, died 29 Mar 1953 New Zealand, he was son of Jonathon Marfell 29 Mar 1843/1922 & Sophia Anne Turner 1840 Peterstowe.
Frederick John 1871 married Sara Marion Seymour (May)Connelly 1871 on 13 Sep 1898 Auckland, New Zealand - 2 children.

Regarding Fred 1870's Mining Experience, the certificate I have is for "Mine Examiner" State of Illinois, dated 14th June 1904, so obviously on arrival in US he gave up any ambitions towards the Police.

His photograph makes him look quite the "Jack the Lad" I will post it - if I haven't already done so. He was "responsible" for hundred's of Marfell's in America.

I also have a newspaper cutting regarding the death of Wallace Marfell, this caused some confusion as the press item from the Forest of Dean Mercury 12th June 1885 describes an Edwin Marfell, but the date of death and the description regarding copious quantities of alcohol, match the death certificate I have for him.

You may still find some new info. on the public tree "The MARFELL Family in America" on ancestry. but be careful there is some false info. shown on some trees including the birth cert. that Fred falsified when he came to America.

It's a long time since I have heard from you and 10 years since we met up in Vancouver.

I cannot get on line with my PC at the moment, due to a faulty phone line. This message from a borrowed (with permission) Wi Fi signal from my neighbour using my iPad. I haven't checked the web site for a while.

A hole in our pavement revealing our phone cable looks promising for a repair. Fingers crossed.

My interpretation is he travelled to the States between 1891 and 1898 and returned to the UK twice ( at least) in the 1920's
