Thank you for your swift reply. I hadn't found Martha Wood in the 1861 census. Actually I had never looked since she died in 1861 --- but, now I see, not until months after the census was taken. Thanks to you I see her living with her youngest daughter, Mary An [sic] Drew. My husband and I will be coming to the Forest of Dean for the first time this August so only know the area from afar. Your post mentions a William WOOD as a possible brother to James [born 14/15 Jun 1766], the father of William WOOD [m. 1827, d.1877]. James had siblings born in Little Dean as he was. Is Flaxley nearby --near enough for William born in 1765 in Flaxley to be an older brother to James? Also in the 1861 census in the Parish of East Dean where the Drew's were living is what looks like L. D. Hill - Little Dean Hill?? - is there such a place? Anthony and Susannah COOPER as witnesses along with William WOOD to the marriage of James Wood and Martha MASON are still a mystery to me. I don't know anything about Martha MASON yet so assume they must be relations of hers. The question still remains - how to prove that the James WOOD who married Martha MASON is the one who was baptized 14/15 Jun 1766, son of James and Elizabeth. Lynn
