Those confusing Deans (General)

by unknown, Friday, August 03, 2012, 14:05 (4490 days ago)

I am enjoying finding information on the Brains of the Forest of Dean. However, I am totally confused about(even having read what Slowhands had to say about those Deans) Littledean, Little Dean, East Dean, West Dean, etc. Which are villages or settlements and which are some sort of district?

Is there a map which graphically displays these different places?

There are maps on this site http://www.forest-of-dean.net/joomla/the-forest-of-dean/maps-of-the-forest even a hand coloured one showing the parishes :-)

as I have said before boundaries move over time which just complicates things !!

PS
The BRAINS of Collafield / Littledean should not be to hard to untangle

Early Map of the Parishes in the Forest of Dean..... this was a BIG help! Some places which I had assumed were villages are districts! I think I'll do a little "computer coloring" and hang this for quick reference.

Could you recommend a bit more detailed map of the same area and time period I might buy? I have a nice wall area near the computer which would look so much better with a largish map!

British History on Line (Ordnance maps - late 19th century)

http://www.british-history.ac.uk/map.aspx?compid=55118

Click on different squares to call up sections of interest.

Little Dean 'square' is just past top right of the last H in Monmouth

Click on the part of the map of interest which will enhance that particular area - and click on the edge sides or top and bottom, to move about the square.

- ability to run off map (max area or minimum area) if required

Those confusing Deans - more maps

Excellent! Thank you. Fortunately I was able to visit the Forest back in the 70's and can do a bit of visualization of the some of the places - but not their spacial relationships nor the districts.

The maps help!

Hello Pangur,

Into the 19th Century, the FoD was extra Parochial, ie an inhabited area but was not populous enough for the CofE to be justified in forming parishes and building churches. It was referred to as Forest and then East and West Dean which was used for administrative purposes such as the Census. I could list the 'villages' that formed East and West Dean but it won't help. People were prepared to walk long distances to their favoured church. My great grandfathers sister lived in Soudley, East Dean but was married in St Paul's Parkend (West Dean) in 1850. Her nearest parish church was St John's Cinderford, but St Paul's has a special charm, most impressive.

I'm afraid that if your interest is in the Brain family you must cast your net wide and list every Brain over the whole area and try to make sense of it.

"then East and West Dean which was used for administrative purposes such as the Census" - so if a census lists East or West Dean, that is a reference to a district. If a census lists "Littledean", then that is a village or settlement which is in either West Dean or East Dean? Is Little Dean the same as Littledean? And is Eastdean the district or a settlement?

I am hoping the map will help settle some more of my confusion.

Thanks for the help!!!

By American standards the Deans to which you refer cover a very compact area and if your ancestors were anything like mine they may have links with many villages and areas within the Forest of Dean and neighbouring areas (including across the border/River Wye into Wales) and not have been confined to one particular village.

I have indeed found family from Oxfordshire to Wales to Wiltshire and everywhere between. I just found that I was having trouble telling a village (settlement)name from a district name. I think I am now a bit clearer on the difference between Littledean and East Dean for example.

The family seems to be concentrated in the Forest of Dean, Herefordshire (especially Ross-on-Wye), and Wales.

Thanks...

Pang
