John GODWIN born 1823, Coleford, Gloucestershire. (General)
by charles , Saturday, September 15, 2012, 20:54 (4447 days ago)
I'm trying to find details of the parents of John GODWIN born in 1823 in Coleford, Gloucestershire.
From a copy of the Banns for John's marriage in 1852 at St.Mary-le-Bone, Middlesex, to Mary Paine (born 1822 in Oswestry, Shropshire, it would appear that his father was called JEREMIAH (a farmer)~ but I cannot find any Birth or Baptism records for John to substantiate the names & details of his Father & Mother.
Can anybody help, please ?

Hi, that's great ~ I think that with the PROBATE / WILL info in respect of JEREMIAH GODWIN born 1794, died 1862, probate 1864, some of the missing pieces have now fallen into place.
What I now believe I now have got is :-
Parents = Jeremiah Godwin, born 1794,died & buried St. Briavels 1862.
Sarah Godwin (nee Lewis), born Pontypool 1795,died St. Briavels 1863.
Their Children (all born St. Briavels) =
~ (my ancestor) JOHN GODWIN,born 1823.
~ Richard, born 1827, died & buried St. Briavels June 1860.
~ Jeremiah, born 1829,died (place unknown ?) & buried St. Briavels Dec 1860.
Reason I was previously having trouble was that although I knew from "Ancestry" Census 1841 & 1851 records that the above Jeremiah (senior)& Sarah had a son called Richard born 1827; and another son Jeremiah born 1829 (from an "Ancestry" Family Tree record) ~ I had not been able to place (my ancestor) JOHN GODWIN born 1823 with any parents.
Nw using the Burials info that the sons Richard & Jeremiah both died approx 2 years before their father Jeremiah, AND by virtue of probate info supplied states that JOHN GODWIN was the "Son and only next of kin" ~ I have at last been able to place John with some parents !
Many thanks.
ADDITINAL info if it is of interest to anyne looking at this "thread" :-
(i) I believe Jeremiah brn 1794 have 11 siblings in all ~ the one omitted from the above earlier "thread" is Grace born 1791, died 1855 (but baptised in 1804 at the same time as her brother Jeremiah).
(ii) The parents of the above 12 children, I believe were Richard Godwin 1746~1821, and Mary Godwin (nee Jones) 1755~1809.

? PARENTS of Jeremiah (Jeremy) & Grace Godwin ?
by charles , Friday, October 26, 2012, 23:23 (4406 days ago) @ m p griffiths
Accrding to Forest of Dean (FOD) Parish records ~ Jeremiah (Jeremy) Godwin and Grace Godwin both baptised 30/12/1804 at Hewlesfield, being aged 10 yrs and 13 yrs respectively.
Their FOD Baptism records show parents as being RICHARD & MARY.
I believe these are RICHARD GODWIN resident of City of Gloucester and MARY JONES resident of Newnham who married 1793 at Newnham (per FOD parish marriage records).
QUESTIONS I'M TRYING TO RESOLVE :-
1) ? Are these the correct parents of Jeremiah & Grace ?
2) ? If above (1) is correct ~ who were RICHARD GODWIN'S and MARY JONES' parents ?
Can anybody help.
Thanks,
Charles

Hi Charles,
very quick/early thoughts are
1) I cannot answer part 1 categorically, but why not ?. The dates all fit.
If you are correct, as seems reasonable at first glance, then

I suspect witness Mary Goodwin is closely related to Richard ?.
Searching this site's PRs for all spelling variations of Richard Goodwin/Godwin/etc etc (only 61 in total for all Soundex variations)for possible Baptism I find:

Seems reasonable wrt him later being "resident" at Gloster ??
Unlike the fairly rare Richard, there are 2200 PRs for Mary Jones on this site !.
ASSUMING she was Baptised in Newnham, that "only" leaves 46 of which this is clearly the most likely fit datewise:

Have you searched the likes of LDS etc ?
I'll revisit later, goodnight, Jeff

There are quite a number of Public Members Trees on Ancestry with the GODWIN/JONES family from Gloucestershire, and include Jeremiah and Grace - who died 21 November 1855 Blakeney. Most of these trees - give Richard GODWIN's baptism 17 August 1746 at English Bicknor, father: Thomas
----
On the FOD records, there are Memorial Inscriptions for a Richard & Deborah GODWIN at St Briavels - 1772 - and can see baptisms for this couple, Mary & Joanna - 1757 and 1760, but no other children. National Archives have records for Richard GODWIN, Yeoman St Briavels.
Most of them give Richard GODWIN's death of 1821 in St Briavels, although can't see this on the FOD records.

Do any of the Ancestry trees suggest that the Thomas Haynes who witnessed the marriage is actually Richard's father Thomas ?. I presume it's been discussed.
Thatsaid, Thomas is a common local name, and as Richard is quite an "old" groom then maybe his father has already passed away by the time of his Marriage ?
Perhaps Thomas is a friend of Mary's ?
I can't help thinking this may be him after searching all the relevant PRs ?

There isn't a Marriage Record between any Thomas Haynes/Haines & any Mary abt 1793 in the FoD PRs (I had wondered if Thomas was a potential future husband to fellow witness and possibly widowed? mother? Mary Godwin).
Perhaps the above Ann Godwin is a relative, perhaps even sister of Mary ?
(Joanna even ?).
Pure conjecture I know, but ??.
