Mike John's Monmouthshire Parish Records Website (General)
by donna howells , Wednesday, October 03, 2012, 10:52 (4429 days ago)
Hi
Does anybody know what has happened to this website? I have tried to access it today and it comes up with the message that it is not available. I would appreciate any information as this site was also a huge help in the search for family members who strayed across the borders!
Many thanks

Hi Donna,
from your description I'm afraid I'm not immediately familiar with this site and I thought I knew most of them, sounds a great site as you say.
When did you last use it ?
What website address do you have, please, so someone else can try the link ?
Lately my PC (running MS Vista) has started regularly posting "unavailable" messages when trying to access sites, yet on retrying usually works fine - I think its an old virus-related gremlin, perhaps this is the same for you, have you tried updating all your virus s/w and running scans etc, just a thought.

Those of us who have also been members of Mike's MonFH know there have been many recent difficulties which have also affected the records website. A group of former members are in the process of forming a new group, MonGenes. This is time consuming but they are doing a valiant job. Every effort is being made to make the records available through this group in due time. We should all be extremely grateful for the way this group has, and is, being run.

MonGenes is replacing the MJ Site. It is a Yahoo Groups Site. Membership is being uploaded alphabetically now. I believe the RootswebMonFamilies is still available or will be again.

Further to this discussion, MonGenes is now up and running with a group of nine hard working people at the helm and over 300 members. Everyone on the old MonFH group has been invited to join. Currently however it does not appear in the Yahoo directory of groups. I'm not one of the nine myself, but will have a word with one of them to see if folk around here can be invited too, as so many of us have both Mon and FOD connections.

Me again - within 24 hours of my last post, MonGenes was added to the Yahoo directory so anyone with Monmouthshire connections can now look it up and join. One of its features is a growing database of parish records inspired by the one here.
The old Monfh group is now ex-directory and closed to new members but if you already belong, it is still there and will be kept on as an archive.

Hi Mags,
sorry I can't help you, insofar as I've never had much success myself logging into Yahoo usergroup sites etc, and I have never used the Mons site myself.
I suggest you try direct emailing Joss via their username on the post above. If all else fails maybe he or she could do a lookup for you ?
Good luck !

MonGenes AT Yahoogroups.com is certainly up and running. I belong to it. Members are posting to it daily. I get all the updates of incoming e-mails for MonGenes from Yahoo.

Sorry, been away with no internet access - still away actually, but this b&b has wifi.
For those looking for Mike's original site, I imagine he had taken it down himself. Or not. Maybe it will reappear. Or not. Possibly, according to some bizarre law of the universe, if people stop looking for it, it will be more likely to reappear. You know, like when you can't find your door keys. BUT, in the meantime, many, if not most, of the parish records that were on it are now on a friendly database on MonGenes.
For those who can't find MonGenes - go to http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/ and type MonGenes (all one word, just like that) into the "Find a Yahoo! Group" box.
For those not sure of my gender - yes I have a name that could be either, but I'm of the female persuasion.

"New" site Monmouthshire Parish Records
by Jefff , West London, Middlesex, Friday, December 13, 2013, 22:40 (3993 days ago) @ joss
I think I'm right in saying this is the new Monmouthshire website (I say think as I was never lucky enough to use the old one!, but the signs look good).
http://www.monfh.org.uk/
Clearly the site is still in the early stages, but already includes lots of good stuff and well-worth browsing, just one good example is this interesting detailed list of Births at Chepstow Workhouse.
http://www.monfh.org.uk/?p=36
Being a bit(?) thick, it took me a while to realise that many of the bold headings within the site's pages are actually active hyperlinks - so it's worth moving your mouse pointer about each page and see what might be "hiding", but I'm sure you'd have already spotted this.
