Wounded Soldiers in WW1 - Pte S BROOKES (General)

by dink999, Monday, October 29, 2012, 11:26 (4403 days ago)

As we approach Remembrance Sunday we perhaps think of those relatives who we know sacrificed their lives for "King & Country"

However we may not know so much about some of those who were wounded and survived. I have brief details on a number of men, the first being

Pte. S. BROOKES
2nd Glo'ster Regt., "gassed" on May 2nd 1915 in France.
He enlisted on Jan. 7, 1915. and was sent to France in March.

Eldest son of Mr. and Mrs F. BROOKES, Ashleworth Lane, Hartpury.

Pte 3153 Sidney BROOKES 2nd Glosters died Nov 1918

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Thursday, November 01, 2012, 02:10 (4401 days ago) @ m p griffiths

Searching for Albert & Leonard Brookes of Hartpury I cannot yet find evidence of their war service, but I found this photo of the village War Memorial which sadly does includes their elder brother Sidney who died three years after being gassed... it's to be hoped he would have at least known the outcome of the War before finally succumbing to what was probably considerable & prolonged suffering.

It contains a photo of Sidney and states he "enlisted with the 2nd Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment on 7th January 1915 and was send to France in March. He was "gassed" on 2nd May 1915 and was returned home. He died on 28 Nov 1918 and is buried in the churchyard of Hartpury Methodist Chapel. He was the eldest son of Francis Brookes of Broad Street, previously of Woolridge. He was 23 when he died."

Francis and Louisa Brookes had at least 11 children, the first seven of which were girls and the first two were illegitimate, presumably by Francis. Francis was a hay trusser and had been born and brought up in Hartpury. Louisa was the daughter of William and Eliza Bendall of Maisemore who later moved to Hartpury."

The website states that 125 men of Hartpury served during the Great War, the Memorial lists 14 of them....
Given their older brother had enlisted and returned home wounded before they were of age, I hope young Albert & Leonard were spared service, tho' they may well have thought & even done otherwise.

Hi Dink,
thanks for this interesting new angle wrt the Great War.
Please, have you any particular personal links to the Lanes ?, as you may know a very common surname locally particularly across into Herefordshire - as I hadnt realised until I started researching my own small Lane branch which included a few generations of professional soldiering, as do their relatives the Beards.

I've found and read abt several! WW1 Lanes from our area while researching my own line and currently have Medal Cards and Service Records for a dozen or so applicable to me.
I'm intrigued as to how you research for Wounds rather than DiA, is this thro searching out "local" Medal Cards & Newspaper archives as I've done or do you have more specialist sources ?. I'd be gratefull to learn more, please, altho' if you're a pro Military researcher then I fully respect you may not want to share them.

Thanks eitherway !

Jefff,

The details posted come from the weekly publication The Cheltenham Chronicle & Gloucestershire Graphic.Copies of which are held at Glos Archives & the Cheltenham Local and Family History Centre(Library)

You can see some of what I previously found on this site at

http://www.forest-of-dean.net/downloads/Newspaper/Some_Gloucester_Regiment_Soldiers_191...

I have no connection to the Lane's, my "speciality" has been in producing the Wills & Inquest data, but this WW1 stuff is starting to interest me more

Regards

Wounded Soldiers in WW1

by Roger Griffiths @, Monday, October 29, 2012, 19:59 (4403 days ago) @ dink999

Losses KIA in WWI were around 750,000. The number of wounded would have been 3 to 4 times that number. Some would have recovered but some would have been crippled for life.

Losses in Iraq were and Afghanistan are only reported for KIA. The wounded are never mentioned.
