John COLLINS 1849 Devon; & SMITH, DELACEY, ANSLEY,CLEMENTS (General)

by jevans @, USA, Monday, November 12, 2012, 00:02 (4390 days ago)

Hello,
I am looking for some connection for John E. COLLINS, born in 1849 in (according to his obituary) Heathcock, Devonshire. He married Jane SMITH, daughter of Richard and Mary Ann SMITH (Hillersland, Mailscot Lodge) in the U.S. after emigrating in 1869. The mystery is why did he end up in the Forest of Dean area where he met my great-great grandmother Jane Smith? I cannot find any hint of him in or around FOD. A couple of clues may be; after coming to the U.S. and settling in WI, he became a depot agent at the railway. He also wrote a book about Socialism, and as I understand, he was not formally educated, but self-taught.

I am thinking he came to FOD for employment purposes or perhaps he knew someone in the Smith family and once there, became acquainted with Jane. I have checked the 1861 census but nothing matches.

Note: in searching for Heathcock, Devonshire, I found that there is no such place. There is a Heathstock (now Stockland) and it might be that is where he originated. I have nothing on his parents or siblings. But I do have photographs of unidentified people, taken in Chard and Exeter which are in the vicinity of Heathstock.

The Smith Family was associated with the English Bicknor parish. Sisters of Jane Smith were Mrs. George DELACY, Mrs. Annie ANSLEY and Mrs. Harriett CLEMENTS. Parents of Richard Smith (Jane’s father) were Edward Smith and Elizabeth GWILLIAM in the parish of English Bicknore. Does anyone have these names in their tree? If anyone has any ideas of where I could look next, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Looking at his Obituary on Ancestry - he worked as a Cabinet-Maker in Warren, Illionois. As the James COLLINS on the census returns was a Wheelwright and son a Carpenter - this would seem to be a skill that would have been passed down the family.

This is very helpful! I had found a record of William Collins on the 1851 English census and then found James Collins. But you have given me much more.

John must have been one of the children who died in infancy, the other one was probably Jennie, gathering from census information.

John is not listed here. He would have been about 12 years old. Was it common then for boys to go to boarding school? The census asked the names of people who slept in the household that night. So John was someplace else.

There is always a possibility, John COLLINS was at sea living near to the coast. Ship Carpenters was an occupation.

As Holloway is in Islington District - Edith (1885) baptism (I think) is on Ancestry - and Edith's mother, was Fanny, probably James' sister.
Fanny is aged 1 on the 1861 census.

Jane COLLINS nee SMITH 1849 ,Hillersland prior thread

by jevans @, USA, Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 02:35 (4389 days ago) @ slowhands

Thank you Slowhands, for all that great information. Some of it I have, but much of it is new. I appreciate it!

I believe John Collins was in the FOD neighborhood because the family story is that he emigrated to the U.S. first(which he did in 1869), and Jane followed in 1870. They were married in 1870 in Illinois. So they had some prior connection. I found what I believe is a record of the ship on which Jane sailed. She did not have any Collins or Smiths with her. However, I can't believe she would have made the trip alone.

So I am trying to figure out how he happened to meet Jane and from that, who his parents or siblings were. Someone else on the forum posted some information about some Collins' from Devon. Perhaps there were relatives around FOD and they is why John ended up there. Anyway I have some good leads to follow.

Thanks again for your help!
